Travel: China - Shanghai
-
jeparent,
We went to Shanghai 2 yrs ago on F & E. We stay in Nanjing road with about S$100.00 a night; include breakfast, my friend recommended. It was the cheapest I can find in Nanjing Road. It was very easy to travel around, we took the subway and it was very nice and impressive. If you don’t want to take subway, it is very cheap to travel by taxi in Shanghai. You have to visit Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, if you bring children. I was told it is very very good. My dd1 went with school and shown the picture very impressive. We took a taxi out from city to Qibao ancient town. We tried their fishhead soup. It was very nice and very big portion.
We borrowed books from library, the book shown very good map and things must do. The present website also give very good details. Do some resarch before you go. -

the other minus about its subway is that there is no lift at all! and some station the escalator run only one direction either all up or all down!!

MMM:
taking taxi can be a nightmare in shanghai. each time a taxi stopped, a big group of people will rush forward to get into it. with 2 kids, no way i can fight with them and i certainly have no desire to do so.
Once we were at yuyuan and I was waiting for someone to get off the cab. Some local just came and plonk herself at the front seat (despite that she can see that I was waiting for the passenger beside the cab). That is so ungracious. Also do not take the traffic light for granted in shanghai. Trust your eyes whether to cross the road and not the traffic light. The driver don't seem to respect people's life. They are left hand drive so it's always opposite of Singapore.
was in shanghai in dec 2008. while dh was holed up in hotel for meetings, kids and i were out and about. took the subway quite often and find it pretty good. but always hold the kids' hands especially in crowded places. never let your kids out of your sight even in shopping malls.
books are really so cheap and we loved the underwater world.
in a restaurant, pls do not call the waitresses \"xiao jie\". you would get whacked. call them \"fu wu shen\" instead. -
Is it ok to bring kids to Shanghai (F&E tour)? Safety wise I meant. Especially in December (winter)?
Thanks -
Just came back from Shanghai holiday. I stayed in Modena Putuo - this is run by Fraser Hospitality group. Rates are affordable - loft deluxe can be had for about 500RMB per night (note this is a studio unit, NOT a hotel room per se). There are cooking facilities, microwave oven, flatscreen and dvd player. Free internet and wifi in the rooms.
Thanks to the now ended expo 2010. There are now 11 metro lines in Shanghai so it's really convenient to get from point a to b. In fact, one of the metro line now starts from pudong airport and ends at Hongqiao airport - so one can take metro from airport to hotel.
Taxi was not hard to get. Point to note is that they only accomodate 4 pax at a time (children included) - drivers will usually decline if there are 5 passengers. Starting fee is 12yuan.
We took day trips with local tour agencies. Eg, day trip to Zhouzhuang is about 140RMB, day trip to Hangzhou also about there. You can discuss the pricing at the tour counter...the prices are not cast in stone.
For those who love cheap chinese books. Happy to say that there is a bookstore (more like a book shopping centre) that has really good finds there. it's called 上海书城 and it's off East Nanjing Road (there are signages when you exit from the 人民广场 mrt in the direction of Raffles City. Managed to find some books that were sold out in Dangdang (online retailer). These are at retail prices but still way cheaper than in SG and also you buy and carry (no fretting on when dangdang will deliver). It's wayyyy better than what I found in Shenzhen, Zhuhai or Beijing (the main bookshops in those cities pale in comparison). -
Dear all,
Anybody been to Zhu Jia Jiao? Please share your itinerary or walking route.
Thank-you.

hquek,
Some questions:
Any recommendation on the places to stay and eat in Shanghai?
Where do you find the local tour counters?

Thanks for sharing! (stayhome via pm).
I’ve booked a trip to Shanghai and Beijing. Looking forward to the trip! -

Taxis can be that strict...it all depends. I once had to take another cab back becos I was with hubby, my sis and 2 kids (3yr, 5yr); and I was the one more familiar with the transport system. Mostly if the cab drivers see you have such a group, they won't even stop.
