Using MOE lingo,
Dear parents,
MY DD is going through DSA this year and I have read through the DSA 2021/2020 and is halfway thru the DSA 2019 thread. I have learnt many useful information through the generous sharing of active parents and is most grateful. I do have a question i would like to ask as I cannot seem to find the answer to it in the past threads and MOE DSA information website.
May I ask if it is possible to try to DSA to the same secondary school to the same domain (Performing arts) two times? My DD is competent in 2 music instruments that her preferred secondary school offers under the performing art domain. All answers are very much appreciated and thankful in advance
The category is Performing Arts; and
The talent area is Concert Band, Guzheng etc.
Hence, it’s possible to apply to the same secondary school using Performing Arts twice. Example:
Choice 1 - Performing Arts - Concert Band
Choice 2 - Performing Arts - Chinese Orchestra -
Dear all, looking for DSA for my DD. My daughter has been a class monitor in p5 as well as in p6. Is it ok to apply for her under ‘leadership’ ? She’s also good at visual arts. Not trained but has been advised by her art teacher to go for DSA visual arts. Please advise about schools towards west side. We are not that much serious about DSA but want to give a try under the above fields. Please help.

If you are not asking exactly which schools are good but want to check out which schools offers those DSA domains, you may go to this link, and open the “DSA” workbook. It will not display correctly if viewed from phone. View it from a computer instead

Dear Floppy,
Many thanks for your swift and clear answer. -

I would follow her Teacher’s recommendation to do visual arts! There’s probably a lot of head prefects and vice Head prefects eyeing leadership DSA.

Perhaps you can get a good idea which AL band your dd is going to be in using p5 results. Then pick the schools? There’s SOTA too, although not along the west. -
Dear parents,
Sorry I have another burning question to ask all of you. Once the MOE DSA online portal is closed and secondary schools done their own internal selection, the next step is to reach out to the primary schools to ask them for the report books (I presume).
So for this request, is this like a ‘live link’ that the primary school sent to the secondary school? As in every time the primary school administrators update via the cockpit, the secondary schools will ‘see’? Or it is a 1-time ‘dead’ upload of P1-July 2022 report book information and prelim results must be requested again?
Why I post such a weird question is that my friend told me that some secondary schools will wait until after Prelim results is out then decide the final
CO list.
Sorry this is such a technical and weird question to ask, pardon me if this isn’t the right forum page to post. -
I guess the only people who know the answer are teachers or staff working in schools (or maybe former staff).
Hope someone can give some insights.
I think in previous 2 years’ DSA threads the Prelim results came out later than the interviews.
More likely the initial screening will be based on SA1 results. Attend interviews etc…
Maybe the final final CO/WL will consider the Prelim results? For those near the bottom of the list? Not sure… -
Dear Zac’s mum,
Thank you for your swift reply.
Yes, I actually contemplated asking the GO staff in my DD’s primary school too. But so far the experience I have with the GO staff is ………
I agree with you, to me to even consider the Prelim results for the student feels like the child is really a half-half case. -

No standard answer.

Each Secondary school have their own practice, how they intend to offer CO or Wait-list (WL), to short-listed candidates.
For those who are awaiting for their WL to be converted into a CO, perhaps the school will even look into their actual PSLE AL score, before decide whether to convert or not. Not so much as looking into their primary school's Prelim SA2 results anymore. By then, SA2 results not important anymore.
Why ?
Because
Every primary school set different standard, for their Prelim 4 subjects. Some schools set easy Prelim papers, because knowing that students taking PSLE soon, don't want to stress them too much. In contrast, some GEP schools like RGPS / Nanyang, may set tough Prelim papers. So, where is the yard stick or common barometer, to measure Prelim standard ? Zero, don't have !
As we all know,
WL are not really the Secondary school's first choice of students. COs are indeed their desired first choice students. The WL listing start when ? WL start only, after the last CO has been issued out. By then, the schools have already finalized, sorted out who they want, as their desired first choice candidates.
So, if u were to ask :
does PSLE AL score still matter, after all ?
Yes, perhaps,
to this group of WL students.
You still need to do well, in your PSLE.
But of course,
to those who have been offered COs, no need to worry about PSLE AL score, anymore. Is up to them to either accept or reject (turn down) the CO, in the event the CO awarded is not actually their desired first choice school. If students turn down COs, in favor of going to another Sec school, then they still need to rely back on their PSLE actual AL score, to meet the school's entrance official, admission
Cut-off-point.
In fact, based on past years' observation, around the time of the year once the COs have been issued out, many parents come to this forum in dilemma, telling us that their children received one CO, or more than one CO, so should they accept the CO or not ?
Strange, right ?
If you not interested in the school, in the first place, why even bother to apply to this school, for DSA ? And then after gotten it, come here, scratch head in dilemma, ask us for opinion, whether should accept or turn down the CO ?
Example
say,
Dunman High offered your son a CO (Chinese Orchestra).
But, your son prefer to go to Hwa Chong. So, he turned down Dunman High CO and rely on his overall PSLE AL score, to enter Hwa Chong, instead.
There could be external, influencing factors, which we (parents) have no control over.
Sometimes, your son may be influenced by his peers, classmates, school mates or Cca mates. If his best friend is going to Hwa Chong, he will be attracted to the idea of going to Hwa Chong too, and not choose Dunman High (CO). Friendship bonding (the emotional aspect) with school-mates, is an important factor, for teenagers at their age.
===========================
Also, do note that
In some Secondary schools (not all schools, though), even if u did DSA your way in, your PSLE AL score still matter, after all.
Why ?
Because
When come to the allocation of Secondary 1 classes,
1) some schools allocated, by looking at your overall, Total AL score. They put the better scoring students, into one class.
And put those not-so-good scorers into the last few classes. Then, what happen ?
Pupils will remain in this same Lower Secondary (1 and 2) class for two years, until the end of Sec 2. When they choose their Sec 3 subject combination, then they split, go to different Sec 3 classes.
2) other schools dont look at the Total, overall AL score.
Instead, they allocated Sec 1 classes, by looking at your individual PSLE subject AL score.
a) so, those who scored AL 1 for PSLE Mathematics, may be placed into one Sec 1 class, together.
b) while those who scored AL 1 for PSLE Science, may be placed into another different Sec 1 class, together.
c) What happen, if you have gotten AL 1, for both PSLE (Maths and Science) ?
Then, maybe they slot u into a Sec 1 class with many high flyers inside, where this class overall, Total AL score is low (eg. AL 5)
So,
even if u do DSA your way successfully into such schools, your PSLE individual subject / overall Total score, will still matter after all, once upon embarking onto your Sec 1 journey, into such schools.
Of course, there are also schools that don't bother. They simply rojak the Sec 1 classes, by mixing up the students accordingly, at random.
If you are interested enough to find out more about how your Secondary school form the Sec 1 classes, can always call up the VP (Academic), to inquire. -
There are wait-listed individuals? I didn’t know. How does it work? What if all the COs and WLs students do very well and qualify for the school? Do they all get in?
I just know my DD had a CO which was then converted into the offer during PSLE release day which we have to submit for Secondary 1 registration. I think she had the CO way before prelims, but my memory fails me.
