DSA 2022
-
Your daughter accepted SOTA CO (Theatre studies), a few years ago. SOTA is an Independently run school, not controlled by MOE.
Under the MOE umbrella control, for both (IP and O-level Secondary schools), nobody will know whether your Wait-list (WL) will get converted or not.
When or How will you know, then ?
Only on that very day when your kid receive his (her) PSLE results slip, on that late November PSLE actual results Announcement date, what PSLE AL score your kid gotten, then u will know, because MOE will inform (notify) students, whether their WL gets converted, or not. If their WL gets converted successfully, then they are not allowed to take part in Sec 1 posting anymore, because they already have gotten a seat inside the DSA-CO-acceptance Secondary school. Otherwise, based on their PSLE AL score and the option of placing their 6 Secondary schools, one by one, they will participate in S1 posting exercise.
You question, how does this work ?
1) schools will wait for all the COs’ reply first.
Example
Say, one Secondary school offer 30 COs. These COs comprise a combined mixture of DSA from (Academic + Sports + Leadership + Performance Arts ) domain.
After the PSLE final paper Higher Chinese is over, during that week, DSA students will ponder over, how they have fared, per PSLE subject, in the entire PSLE. They will discuss with their parents : should they accept the school’s CO or turn it down, reject ?
After the PSLE final paper HCL is over, P6 students have about one to 2 weeks to reflect upon, to think through thoroughly and carefully, before giving their answers, to the DSA-CO schools.
Suppose
For this DSA school, say, out of 30 COs they have issued out, say, 18 students come back and accepted her COs, while the balance of 12 students rejected her COs.
So, what happen now ?
12 vacancies will arise, as a result of 12 COs being turned down. So, they will turn their attention now to the Wait-list candidates.
If inside the Wait-list-
a) scenario 1
say, there are Total 20 WL students. Then out of these 20, the first 12 WLs, from WL #1 to WL #12, will be converted successfully.
The remaining 8 students, ranked from WL #13 to the last slot, WL #20, Sorry, won’t be converted. These remaining 8 WL students will need to fall back upon their PSLE AL score, participate in the S1 posting exercise.
b) scenario 2
Say, there are Total 10 WLs.
But, 12 COs have been rejected.
So, all the 10 WLs will be successfully converted into COs.
As mentioned earlier, WLs are not the schools’ first choice students. Thus, WL have to wait patiently for vacancies to arise, from those COs who have turned down the COs, before their WL turn can be processed.
And inside the WL listing, There is ranking. You don’t jump the queue.
Eg.
If an opportunity arises because someone rejected a CO, then WL #1 being in higher ranking, will get converted first, before WL #2, the next one down, inside the same WL listing. -

Aiyo... so everyone that's passed DSA is \"waitlisted\" lor. Confirmation comes only after PSLE results are released. That's my understanding all along.

From your earlier description, I thought there was a distinct difference between the 2 groups WL and CO. I was wondering why there was another waiting list of people trying to get DSA

The difference is, COs are as good as a confirmed place in the school. The only factor that can erase your place is if your PSLE score turns out to be below the offered Stream’s minimum requirement (generally known to be 200 or 20, for Express stream).
For WLs, the additional factor that first determines whether you will get the place is: if someone higher up the list has turned down their place (during the form submission phase). If none turned theirs down, WLs dont get any chance even if meet the Stream’s minimum requirement.
Perhaps a blunt way to put it is, WL is the reserve team (sports analogy) or understudy (theatre analogy). Only if a CO forgoes the place, then the WL has a chance to step in and take the place. -

Hi parents
This is a workbook created with data from school finder site. It may be of some help to you in your research on selecting a school based on DSA domain.
Go to this site:
https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/sg.parent
And view the “Singapore Secondary School Search DSA” workbook.
It may not work from smart phone. do view it from computer
). Is there a central place/link where I can get a better understanding/clarification of the similar/overlapping terms used in the DSA column (talent areas) ?

Hi, I understand that results still matters for DSA. However, i would like to ask if the school offers NA/NT stream, does that mean school usually will not consider giving a CO if the results fall under that range? Thanks!

U may need to check with the specific school directly. Not much data/personal stories on this issue available on this forum.

Dear phtthp,
Thank you for your explanation. It is a wake-up call to me that actually even with the CO in hand, my DD still has to to work hard so as not to land in the last class! I am having extreme tunnel vision now - of just a 3-months ahead forward vision to be frank! -

Wait a minute. So there is a difference between those with COs and WLs. I didn't know about WLs.

Well, I suppose the one good thing about a WL is that of choice. If the kid does very well in PSLE and then a place is opened up for him in the school, he can choose to reject the place unlike those with COs. I'm still curious what they can do if someone rejects a CO? Fine the person?
