For those FTWM, May I know how you all take leave for your psle child, Or stop working for a year? My child is unmotivated to study herself

Post covid,
hard to ask boss for leave. Because on and off, even if take leave, if your dept is short handed, they may still ask u to work from home. And when they ask u to work from home, how u going to coach or supervise your P6 child in peace at home ?

And if u refuse to work from home, continue to coach your kid at home, in this shaky pandemic era where one can lose job easily if dont comply to boss requirements, can cause loss of income for the family.

Maybe what u can do this -
For subject (Science), say, for example, class Science Tr will distribute a timetable to all P6 students in school, to help them prepare revision for PSLE Science, by topic, weekly. Means every week, your child ought to have completed revision, for this Science topic X or that topic Y. This helps a lot, in terms of keeping your kid on his / her toe, what to revise for each week, which topic to revise. Make full use of this timetable given by your school Teacher, to help your kid prepare for Psle Science revision, at home.

The same thing, applies to Maths (PSLE) revision, because Maths, like subject Science, go by individual topics or chapters, inside your P6 textbook.

But,
for languages subjects (English & Chinese), there is no such school / class timetable given by school Teachers.

Reason being, languages is \"learnt slowly bit by bit, via gradual accumulation \". Languages like Chinese zuowen or Oral for (Mother tongue, English), don't go by individual topic / chapter. During Psle Oral, invigilators can test u any topic, under the sun.

In DH’s office, the mummies will start to do half day part-time at the beginning of the calendar year before taking no pay leave from May/June till PSLE exams are over. Some of them start to take leave as early as end of P5.

I don’t think it’s easy to motive them to study hard. Even my secondary 4 daughter is also not the motivated kind. She does not know what she wants to be in the future. More practical may be to take leave (if your company allows) and help guide them over this last stretch before PSLE.

Your Sec 4 daughter is different, because she is in the IP programme and IP students have an affliated Junior College awaiting them, come Year 5.

But your daughter will be \"automatically\" self-motivated when she reach Year 5 (IP) or JC1, because of the National A-level exam that she need to clear. Once have \" National \" exam, students will sit-up, take notice & action !

The same,
apply to Sec 4 students taking GCE \"O\" level exam. Knowing that they need to rely upon their L1R5 score to get admitted into either Junior colleges or into the Polytechnic, many will be self-motivated, since now already reached Term 2, and Chinese bu-hua Oral National exam is taking place soon round the corner, in Term 3 (July). Many are already rehearsing for Chinese Oral, at home.

Btw , mid-year exam (Term 2), is coming up soon in 3 weeks' time, right after 1 May (Labour day)

Hahaha nope! Thanks for clarifying, tho.. what I truly meant was to bring the kids for school open houses, it will open their eyes and they will eventually find their motivation (whatever that will be!) also to guide them into finding greater meaning for working hard.

I feel like most mummies take half day first, always to try out.. but will eventually realise the work load is still the same, even though they only get half the time at work (or even half the salary). So eventually will apply to go fully off work for a few months, usually from end may/ June onwards till end of psle.

Perhaps talk to your teenage daughter about what you do at work, your career, your hubs career .. allow her some time to speak with your relatives/friends who are in other occupations that they are passionate about .. children are often unmotivated as they don’t know what they want in life.. so we can give some assistance.. (you want to work in the hospital like Auntie T, treat patients, or go to courts like Uncle M, does she like debating etc? Show them when ever there’s a chance.)

I feel like most mummies (my circle of friends) take half day first, always to try out.. but will eventually realise the work load is still the same, even though they only get half the time at work (or even half the salary). So eventually will apply to go fully off work for a few months, usually from end may/ June onwards till end of psle.

Yes find out / sound out what kind of arrangement is possible with boss.

Just sharing my ex colleague’s case - pre covid. She switched to part time for half a year (cos she wishes to spend more time revising with the kid) and took 50% pay cut. Unfortunately, her workload didn’t cut 50% and in the end she left office often at 4pm and brought work home to continue. Unable to rest, and spend time efficiently as she planned and was very tired.

Over at my DH office, the mummies workload cut by half because the pay also cut by half. Fair right? The mummies doing part time leave between 12.30pm to 1pm

If pay cut 50% but workload not cut then this is exploitation. If civil service, can report to PSD. If private, report to MOM.

So far, the mummies feedback on taking no pay leave to help out during PSLE has been positive. Their children results did improved.

I am a SAHM, had i not stay at home keeping a close watch at my children during PSLE year, I will not be able to keep track on them
