Nope, nothing so far. Status still at processing, no email or messages either.

If you child really want to study medicine and cannot get a place here, can consider studying overseas.


As it is, to study medicine in Singapore now, the uni fees over 5 years is about 150-170k (living expenses over the 5 years not included). Study medicine in UK probably 500-550k is enough (uni fees plus living expenses over 5 years). Assuming you get the 100k grant, it is about 400-450k.

With some HDB flats now approaching 1 million dollars, can do your sums and consider.

Based on our last year’s experience, “processing” means not successful to get an offer for medicine and the application is currently assessed by another department. You probably get the offer for your 2nd or 3rd choice in a few days time. Don’t despair - can always try local U next year or consider UK, Australia and/or Dublin… that’s what we are prepared to go through… all the best!

Kudos to parents like of @Desmond Tang. The wait for each year has been very anxious even for parents. Especially those who had their results in 2020. Everything changed overnight.


For those who considering UK, it is not easy to be selected as well for international students. Quite a number of Uni requires you to do Bio at A levels and some needs you to do UCAT. Getting that interview is important. Results of the interview came out very fast…something we did not expect. 55K pounds a year + lodging and food is around 12k pounds at least. This means almost 100k SGD a year. Although there is a grant of max 150k for 3 yr, there are still other considerations such as residency, conversion, etc. If one can afford, it may be good to be there for 10yrs at least before returning. So kids want to study overseas, it is best to start early to understand the requirements, costs, bursary or even scholarships. For next generation parents, the savings, insurance, investment need to start young and with the right investment waves, you may be able to accumulate wealth and balancing enjoyment as well.

For those who wants to do dentistry, this year you need to pass MDT before you get a chance for interview. MDT could be hard… if you do many things with your hands, it appears to be ok with proper reading of the questions and time management.

Good luck for those who have yet to get the posting or had received the waitlist.

For those applying for ABA, I do believe you need good referees and good personal statement. Be concise but elaborate enough in your statement. Do let your peers/seniors read through especially those who are in there. Do let your parents or siblings who stand beside you be good critics.

Of course the efforts to build that resume is also important. From my old family doctor, he said it is calling to be a doctor, thus he knew what he needed to get there.

It may be hard for both parents and children to move forward at times if a placement was not given especially everyone going to the course are one of the best.

Just read a poly grad 3rd attempt got into YLL.

And there is a road beyond a Dr… among my batch of peers, there are many who had done extremely well in their area of work. Two things you need in life: a good mentor and good timings… your life will be pretty well looked after.

For males, the advantage of studying in NUS or NTU medicine is that can disrupt from NS. If study overseas, need to complete NS first.


Plus study locally, can take loans for the uni fees.

But 150-170k uni fees to study medicine over 5 years locally is really not cheap (comes with 5 year bond). If add in living expenses, hostel fees (for NTU medicine students), overseas electives, can come up to 180-250k over the 5 years.

For the grant, does the international student need to have good CCAs? It sounds challenging to balance medical studies with CCA.

As for staying in UK for at least 10 years, is it due to specialisation in further studies or doing residency? How hard is it for foreign students to get UK residency places and do they pay well enough so the kid doesn't need any more parental support?

It seems quite easy to get the grant in the past. So don't think even need CCA.

If plan to come back to come back to Singapore to work, then need to stay in UK for 5 or 6 years only (6 years if plan to do 1 year housemanship there).

I would think that it is not easy in UK for foreign students to get residency places for popular specialties (actually, residency is a US term, don't think the UK uses it).
