Application for NUS/NTU Medicine 2021/2022

You will be notified if you are being placed on their reserve list and at the same time also be offered the next course of your choice while waiting for the outcome. If no notification received then you are not on the reserve list.

I have seen not once but thrice how my son been through the tedious and rigorous stages of preparing the applications for medicine submission. In year 2019 for NUS and NTU, got both interviews, unsuccessful for NUS but on NTU wait-list and also no chance after a very long wait. Reason being the wait-list was far too long verses the vacated slots available.

Just last year 2021 he tried his chance again through NUS ABAS and also not successful. He didn't take the BMAT thus did not apply for NTU. He was so confident this year cos got ground experience and very good referees as compared to previous year. There were many factors in play in their selection processes and also many top talented candidates. Not surprised that it is not easy to get to study medicine in our three local medical universities.

Like the common saying that even though many doors were shut but opportunities do exist at the next door being opened. He was offered a full scholarship from NTU (Year 2019) to pursue healthcare science as an alternatives to medicine. Coupled with a NTU-DUKE NUS Medical Pathway (on conditional terms and only 10 top students will be admitted) to study medicine after his post-graduate degrees. Even if he is still not able to get to study medicine this time again, he is still able to take up a career in the area of specialize aspect of biomedical science or allied health profession.

They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself. Understand at times we can't get over what had happened and still fail to make it even as we tried so hard. Most importantly we must have a positive mindset and with a strong will there will be a way as it leads us to Rome. When we look back later part in life at those time changes, we may be surprised by what had changes from without and within us.

If we can dream it, we can do it. Best wishes for the bright future ahead!

Let's not make the suggestion to sell house, funding the overseas course + living fees.

While parents have the responsibility to provide and fund the education, it has to be gauged.
Risking their own retirement needs and comfort is a no-no. Parents are human and many forget to live well after offspring comes along.

While parents made/make plan with offspring in mind; offspring's plan may not include parents...look around, have a thought. If unable to get a place in local U + undying aspiration and will only study med course, please consider taking a study loan and repay it by the son/daughter.

There is nothing wrong with the 5 yrs bond which tied to the grant (~80% of fees).
That 5 yrs in an established environment is where these young docs need to be.
Loaded knowledge in the head vs real world in medical field...before deciding going into life long specialize field.
Look at the bond period with a right perspective.

If you child really want to study medicine and cannot get a place here, can consider studying overseas.

As it is, to study medicine in Singapore now, the uni fees over 5 years is about 150-170k (living expenses over the 5 years not included). Study medicine in UK probably 500-550k is enough (uni fees plus living expenses over 5 years). Assuming you get the 100k grant, it is about 400-450k.

With some HDB flats now approaching 1 million dollars, can do your sums and consider.

Congrats to ALL proud Mum & Dad on son/daughter getting a place in med.

Enjoy that fulfilling peace and happiness…it stays for very long, in my case.

For those in waiting, keep the faith.
Trust that all has done their very best.
If a place is not granted this year, don’t rush into accepting another course…
Take a gap-year, serve the NS, do something meaningful, look at feasible alternative…try again next year.

Just to update my child’s status is still ‘processing’. We are resigned to the fact that already rejected by nus med, but puzzled why still haven’t updated to 2nd or 3rd choice. The long wait is like haiz … hahaha

The 5 year bond is for the local medicine course while the grant is for those that study medicine overseas.

It is really very difficult to get into medicine locally (both NUS and NTU). You need to get almost perfect A level grades just to be called for the interview (only 1 B allowed for the 6 subjects, I believe). And the success rate for the interview is probably at most 50% only (based on the number called for interview).

Conversely, to study medicine in UK, 2As and a B for A levels should be enough to get you into a recognised medical school there (the top medical schools there of course need better grades). Plus they don't even look at what you get for GP.

For the grant, does the international student need to have good CCAs? It sounds challenging to balance medical studies with CCA.

As for staying in UK for at least 10 years, is it due to specialisation in further studies or doing residency? How hard is it for foreign students to get UK residency places and do they pay well enough so the kid doesn't need any more parental support?

My apologies, CCA and likes of internship during academic years in JC, IB or poly as it builds one character and of course a portfolio.

Not sure about specialisation how difficult to get in but pretty much the same across countries. The UK advantage is that you will likely to have lots more opportunity for hands on. Staying or coming back becomes an option. if you come back as a specialist, you don't need to climb from the bottom.

Singapore based on a news article, without retiring specialist, the %may be much lesser than 50%.

Getting into UK med school as an International student may not be as diificult as Singapore (think 1% acceptqnce for international student). But it is not easy too...eg, 22 international student out of less than 300 medicine students in one of the university.

I feel you as I have gone through similar path except the ending is a relief.

Time to move forward and you never know what awaits for the person.

I emailed NUS Admissions and they sent the following:

Thank you for your email. The majority of the offers have already been sent out and the rest will be sent by the end of the week. Candidates who are on the reserve list will be notified by 6th May.

So don't lose hope yet!!
