Most of our leaders are humanities major, not STEM.

If your child aspire to lead, STEM may not be the best direction statistically

Hi! Thank you for your kind advice & detailed response!

I do been wondering if \"less than Gold/Platinum/top\" in NMOS, SMOPS, and RIPMWC stands any chance for DSA Math into RI/HCI. There's probably higher chance for NUSH due to their 100% DSA policy with cohort size of ~180 students. So your \"prima facie\" reply nailed it.

I guess I'll go for full transparency here as we need as much advice as we can get, and we do not have any friends who'd been in this similar DSA Math journey. We do have friends who gotten into NUSH but via SIE (after PSLE), and into RI via Sec 1 posting. But we're not confident with PSLE either due to mother tongue & English.

So here's my son's full DSA awards/activities list, would love to have suggestions & comments please 🙏 to maximize his chance getting into NUSH or RI or HCI or SST or NJC via DSA Math/STEM/Infocomm route: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1CGLhSDwH0ejd13owa1B3ulMcCcsonQz-tTSp29xxOaQ/edit?usp=sharing

Impressive profile for No 6 & 7. I feel that you are on the right track in these 2 areas for informatics Olympian. And you stand a good chance for Stem DSA domain. Usually top performers for National Olympiad Informatics r from NUSH, RI and HCI, but I’m not sure if RI and HCI has stem domain or not.

For those who are looking at NUSH but aren’t triple platinum award winner, my suggestion is just apply…

The bad news is that historically NUSH has had ~2,000 applicants for 170-180 spots. When you take out some of the groups mentioned above (i.e. kids with reasonably good odds), the odds for the remaining spots are even worse (could be 20:1 or so - hard to say the exact figure).

However, the conditional odds for any individual kid will be different than this range, and "you can’t win if you don’t play." Given that everyone will be able to sit for the selection test this year, using one choice (if dream school) is probably a better option than it was over the last two years where the applications were screened for interviews (probably 300-400 kids).

Additionally, I’d guess NUSH will take in a wider range of students than say RI (or RGS) math. The cohort has previously been made up of kids from 70+ primary schools, and I doubt all of these kids are Platinum award winners, etc. While there are definitely kids that get three COs across Raffles + NUSH + Something Else, there are also plenty of cases where got only NUSH or didn’t get NUSH but got something else (some "complainers" last year).

This is not to say the odds are "good" but if you are hoping for the school I’d say give it a try. At a minimum, you may have a chance at a few of the spots that open up during the SIE.

Those that are invited already probably also have other offers from other schools so it is not confirmed yet.

NUSH provides a somewhat fair starting point for everyone through a written test. Those that do well will then be tested for aptitude through a camp and an interview if necessary.

Even if you are accepted into the waiting list, the probability of you getting in is very high since most people with CO have offers from other schools too.

However, it is true there are many applicants thus success rate is low. Do note that NUSH syllabus is different so it will be hard if you "mug" for this test and do not keep up the hard work in the future. All the best.

hi all. would like to check if you have tried applying DSA via MOE website?

Any idea why the Talent Area drop down box does not contain any fields? I tried searching and just drop down the entire list but nothing inside.

              Thanks.

Note: The DSA-Sec Portal is best viewed on Chrome and Microsoft Edge browser.

Seeking advice/suggestions for DSA Math. Our first choice is NUS High, and then Raffles Institution. We're not sure which school to aim for the third choice.

My son is strong in Math (but not topmost, he has Silver in NMOS & SMOPS and 97 percentile in RIPMWC, didn't make it to Round 2). He loves coding and aspires to be an informatics olympian.

Weighing between HCI - Hwa Chong International, SST - School of Science & Technology or NJC - National Junior College (Secondary) for the last slot. How & what should we consider?

                      Thank you in advance 🙏

PS: I made a google sheet template to help prepare for filling the DSA online form. I put in max 50 characters & max 300 characters check too. Hopefully useful: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1VuXcKe0SPeuA4n9DHoEfySTSGHlJLQ5zDBMs4g3lGuk/copy
My child has almost similar profile as yours’ except the coding experience even though he likes coding, is in computer club CCA and has attended few Python classes here and there. What I am thinking about for my child is NUSH, RI and NJC. Actually a bit sceptical about RI since I believe Math domain would be too competitive and I don’t want it to be a chance wasted. Not sure what will I select, if not RI. Probably ACSI(but being IB would focus on Eng Lit and my child not really good in languages)/SST(after reading a few responses here). All the best for the DSA exercise. We will be going through it next year.

Really true about RI DSA Math domain being a risk of \"a chance wasted\". Assuming around 5 students only (perhaps at max), then really unlikely for non-Platinum/Gold math olympians. RIPMWC itself already filters only top 60 Primary 6 children for Round 2 (which my son almost made it but didn't).

Specific on Coding/Infocomm/Computational Thinking DSA talent area, there aren't many options, top school there is HCI:
                        https://postimg.cc/B8GjpBGW
                        https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/sg.parent/viz/SingaporeSecondarySchoolSearchDSA/Search

We've just attended e-Open House of SST today, and my son had a chat with an SST student also afterwards, and he decided not to put SST among the 3 DSA options. As it stands now, we'll take the chance and aim for: NUSH Math, RI Math and HCI Infocomm.

Wish us the best of luck!
