DSA 2022
-
Hi hi, just wanted to share some information that I thought would be useful for those that want to try DSA to CHS via basketball.
I was chit chatting with this boy who DSA into CHS basketball, really nice chap, had a very good impression of him.
Anyway he said that it’s ok if the student doesn’t have any experience in basketball or plays it competitively in his primary school or even joined the CCA. They will be assessed during the trial for their potential. He has seniors who DSA without any experienced and got selected. He said height is one of the factors. In terms of number of kids selected, his year 7 kids got selected. The year before only 5.
So his advice, if you have interest, just go ahead and come for the trial. Hope that helps!
Wished I had gotten his name so I could write to the school to officially praise him. Lol! -

DSA without experiencing the sport? I didn't know that is possible.

I think have to take some of the students' words with a pinch of salt, especially when they are trying to 'sell' you their school

That said, I'm sure if you are 1.8m tall as a 12yo, I'm sure the school (and probably every other school) will consider you favourably for basketball, with or without prior experience, as long as you can do the basics (i.e. catch a ball when someone tries to throw it to you, and pass it to your team mate). -
For those who are trying for a dsa spot this year - remember for the P6s this year, due to the pandemic for the last 2 years - there are limited no of opportunities for players to “shine”. Only one NSG for all the games (some 2 because last year there were some games allowed). Especially for team sports where playing and competing is even more limited amidst all the safe distancing measures. So, I say, go ahead and try if the interest is there. Again, dsa for the right reasons as what I have always said - the selection panel will pick your child if they see something in your child. Good luck! :boogie:

Agree, there is no harm in trying if the interest is there.

I agree. For bb, nb or vb, height is a significant advantage.

If no height advantage, must specialise your playing position lor.

e.g. bb - pg or shooting guard, nb - c, wa or wd, vb - 二传手 or 自由人 -

If no height then really must be both fast and nimble and got stamina to chase the balls for bb and nb. For vb, my sis is below 1.6m so she used to play the \"toss ball\" position for others to smash.....I am around 1.7m but as i could run as well so I used to play any position that was vacant in nb except GA/GS cos cannot aim hahaha.....

The “toss ball” position is the setter aka 二传手 lor. No choice, short can only set the ball up for other people to be the hero.

Your sis time wouldn’t have the libero aka 自由人 position. Given that role is 101% defensive and cannot appear in front of the net, perfect for people who are fast and nimble, without the height but don’t mind throwing themselves all over to rescue loose balls.
P/S: my daughter also likely to be short. She’s being trained to be one who toss ball as well
otherwise, no position to play other than water “boy”.
