I would think the reasons are:
A curious question:
Why triple science?
- technology is the buzz word around the world now: AI/pandemic/Big data/technology race. And in any period, development/advancement is always associated with technology. People would think possessing science knowledge will put one in a better position for career growth.
I believe next question would be why must take triple science? Where with Chem and any 1 other science subject will allow student to progress to almost any science major in U, even medicine. I think students whom still opt for triple science because:
- they genuinely like science
- science is easier to study than humanity
Humanity is heavier in contents than science -
Largely peer pressure. We did tell him it may make better sense to do double science double humans. But he said he preferred physics to other humans and friends said triple science is for better students 🤦🏻

The school won't ask a student to drop a subject even if the student does not pass at year end (overall marks), let alone WA1/2.

You may need to do some background check, uncover root cause of the problem.
1) is it just that your son don't grasp the Physics concepts, that means purely academic cause only ?
Or
there are actually some other underlying issues as well, beneath the surface of the problem?
Eg.
Is he addicted to
- playing computer games or
- handphone addiction or
- family issue or
- some other issue or
- time management issue, ie.
Too many things been piled up on his plate including Cca over-commitment, etc until he is so busy everyday that he reach home tired everyday, got no time to revise his school work for exam ?
Does your son find himself \" burnout\" ?
Because if is just academic part, he dont quite understand Physics concepts, then problem is much easier to solve.
Once u manage to find a good tutor, work on both ways :-
A) for all Physics topics that's been taught up to Term 2 so far, ensure that he understand his basics principles (fudamentals) well, no matter how the school set questions, trying to twist & turn, tweak the questions here & there to trick him, be it in (Multiple choice or in Structured questions) section, or displayed questions in a graphical format (mode). That Theory textbook, \"Physics Matters\" is very good. Ask him to read it through, and made notes as he come across important principles to be applied, inside the chapters read.
B) do u happen to have a list of what are the remaining Sec 3 Physics topics in Semester 2 (2022 July to Sept), to be taught in CCHM ?
If not sure,
your son can google school website, or he can approach his Physics class teacher for the list of Term ( 3 & 4 ) new topics.
During this one month (4 weeks) June school holiday, ask him to read up Theory in advance first from that very good O-level textbook \"Physics Matters\" by Marshall Cavendish publisher and together with guidance coming from his tutor, guide him how to answer Structured qns well, for the list of new topics. This is one way how to help your son recover, restore back his confidence gradually.
2) if is time management issue, find out from your son per week, roughly, Total, on average, how many pieces of school homework assignment have been issued by his Triple Science class subject Teachers, on a weekly basis.
Do you happen to have any Sec 3 parents' class chat group whereby u can discuss with other parents inside the same class freely, the degree or the amount of school homework assignment workload ? Do u think, is it a (reasonable or demanding ) workload meted out to Sec 3 students, on a weekly basis ?
Because
your son happen to come from a Triple Science class. Naturally, he will have more school assignment(s), compared to fellow school-mates coming from the other Double Science classes, because he is studying one more extra Pure Science subject. However, even then, the amount of school hw issued to students, every week, still need to be reasonable (sane).
I am not sure how much Sec 3 school homework Chung Cheng High Teachers issued to Triple Science class students, on a WEEKLY basis, but as a mom (or dad) with a son / daughter studying here, try to find out more.
Another important thing, also need to find out. Every level, from Sec 1 to Sec 4, school has a Year head.
Find out,
from your Sec 3 level year head : does he or she, monitor how much school work assignment(s), has been issued out to Sec 3 Triple Science students, on a PER week basis ?
Inside each Secondary school, it is the responsibility of the level Year head, to monitor the degree of school homework / assignment(s), issued. This is not the role of your class Form Teacher, but it is the role & responsibility of the level Year Head.
Why ?
Because
We do Not want this type of classroom scenario to happen, because
this ever happened before and is still happening, in some other Secondary schools.
If a similar scenario were to happen here,
then many Sec 3 students will end up mentally very stressed. So, do check your own Secondary school, check whether got such similar situation happen.
Example
Let's say your Triple Science class, is called Sec \"3Y\".
This week, let's say the following happened :-
C) class 3Y Higher Chinese laoshi issued out homework (mock Practice paper 2), due this week.
In the eyes of Chinese laoshi, how many pieces of school hw, did she issue out ? One piece. Very little, right ? One only.
D) same thing.
Class 3Y Chemistry Teacher also issued out a mock Practice Paper on Term 2 Chemistry topics that's been taught. Dateline is due, also sometime this week.
In the eyes of Chemistry Teacher, how many pieces of school homework, did she issue out so far ? Again, same as laoshi, she also issued one piece only this week, but also due this week.
E) let's say class 3Y ( Physics, E-Maths A-Maths Tr, Bio Tr) also do likewise the same thing, as above.
What's happening, now?
In the eyes of each individual subject teacher, they merely issued out out only ONE piece of homework, due this week. No big deal.
But, poor thing,
in the eyes of this class 3Y student, Total, how many pieces of school homework (assignments) are due, for this week alone ?
Total : 6 pieces, ALL due this week !
Tell me, if you are a Sec 3 pupil studying in this class, how not to be mentally stressed (exhausted) ?
Actually, what is the root cause of the problem?
Because there is No communication amongst the Teachers in the same class : how much homework, has been issued so far, this week ?
The Chemistry Teacher is not going to ask her colleagues, Physics Tr nor laoshi, \"hey! This week, I am going to issue class 3Y Chemistry mock paper to do, due this week. How about u, Physics Tr or laoshi or E-Maths Tr or A-Maths Tr or Bio Tr, are u going to issue too, for this week ? \" Where got time to ask your colleagues, this qn ? This is not her responsibility.
Because
the Sec 3 Year head NEVER monitored closely :-
For each Sec 3 class, Total per week, how many pieces of homework, have been issued out so far ? Should set a target. Per week, not more than ... how many ? Fix this weekly target.
Now,
are there any Secondary school(s) in Singapore, whereby the Sec 3 Year head are monitoring closely, the proportion of school homework assigned each week, to students ?
Yes.
CHIJ (Toa Payoh) Secondary Sec 3 Year head, does this close weekly monitoring. IJ (Toa Payoh) have a team of good, caring teachers. They put the welfare of their students, at heart. All schools should learn from IJ (Toa Payoh).
So, folks (parents & students),
pls go and find out, in your own school, whether your level Year head (from Sec 1 to Sec 4), are doing their job, regardless of whether you are studying in an (IP or O-level) Secondary school.
What should u (parent) do, if your school's level head never do any monitoring at all, and your child is so stressed up ?
Use the WhatsApp Parents chat group to discuss the issue first with other parents in the same class and later raise this up, to your class Form Teacher : going forward, how to monitor ?

There are different type of Secondary schools, around. Some schools are so laxed, lazy & relaxed that their teachers hardly issued any Sec 3 school work to their students, for almost every core Sec 3 subject. So, these students have a lot of free time, on hand.
Even if u were to ask the VP (Academic) schools from such relaxed schools, \"hey, how come school Tr xxx never assign Chinese / Bio / Physics homework, to my son / daughter ?\", the VP also don't bother. End up, \"you ownself prepare O-level lah ! Deem whatever u need to do lor ... \"
In contrast,
at the other extreme end, there are schools that keep pumping lots of school homework, to their students. The more academically driven the school is, high chance to happen.
Thus, stay alert to the type of school homework environment, your child fall under. -

Once Term 3 open,
in the first week of July,

Perhaps,
you may also find out from your son, whether CCHM has given his class any 2022 Term 3 test (exam) dates ? (Because some schools have already issued out Term 3 test dates, before Term 2 ended yesterday)
If Yes,
he can prepare for it, earlier.
If No,
clarify with your son, since no Term 3 Physics test, then, is it being substituted by a group work project instead, working in group(s) of 2 to 4 students, called "Alternative" assessment ?
Because Term 3,
whether got tests or no test (do group work project instead), all these eventually will add up, contribute towards his final year end score.
Term 4, Yes, there will be a written end-of-year assessment.

As for dropping subject, it will be up to the individual students, on their own initiative. School won’t ask students to drop subject.
2 timing to drop, if the student himself really decide to drop the subject :-
1) drop at end of Sec 3, after year end exam is over
Or
2) carry on learning the subject matter into Sec 4 (April).
Next year (2023) around mid-April, when SEAB ask you to sign the form indicating the Total number of O-level subjects to register for (sit for) at National exam, there & then, remove Physics out from your signed form, if need be. That means, you are not going to take O-level (Physics) exam.
However,
do this only after much very careful consideration from all angles, if going forward, you have clearly and firmly decided that your son not going to take any Engineering course, in the university in future. Otherwise, it is still better to take O-level (Physics). All the best to your son. Hope that he will persevere, fight on,
overcome, won’t drop. Is going to be a journey, give him lots of encouragement and always keep affirming him. -

if you are keen to go Nanyang Junior College (Science stream, A-level),
target to get minimum 9 points (Raw score) for your L1R5, or better,
Because
the Cut-off for Nanyang JC (Science stream) is 5 points (Nett),
- After deducting 2 points for clearing your Higher Chinese, and
- After deducting 2 points, for CCHM affliation to NYJC.

I read JC DSA intake vacancy will increase from 10% to 20%. Meaning less vacancies for JAE intake. Will it lower the COP ?

RJC science COP is 4. And I read some 4 pointers were ballot out from RJC. NYJC science COP of 5, would mean 5 pointers would undergo balloting too.
For above 2 reasons, 4 nett point would be safer for NYJC science?
