For children with ACTUAL PSLE AL score of AL4 to AL6, they can choose any school with that result.
Unfortunately, as of now, no one knows what their ACTUAL PSLE AL will be. Children who are currently AL4 (4 x AL1) could drop to AL8 (4 x AL2) and AL6 may end up with AL10. As a result, they might end up with a 'lesser' school compared with what they wanted to secure via DSA.
That’s the fear of most people. -

As parents, our goal is to help alleviate as much stress as possible. DSA is a great way for us to achieve that.

Dsa in my opinion helps to look at school beyond academics , the process helps determine best fit ( hopefully) rather than going for the best school ( in terms of culture fit , peer group etc) . Also , I suppose dsa will help secure places in the right ccas and other enrichment activities available in the school related to the talent area so that it will be a rewarding experience during their next phase of life. That’s my rationale behind trying dsa for my kid in the stem areas , I specifically looked for culture fit and the advanced programs they offer in these areas
Sorry for my insensitivity and ignorance. For children with AL4-6, wouldn't it better to use psle score instead of DSA? They might be able to enter a \"better\" school with psle result? Actually they can choose any school with that result -
DSA not only to secure a slot from the preferred school, but also hoping to gain some experience. It can be an eye opener for the kids though. If CO/WL can be offered, it will be a bonus. Also, some schools like NUSH, SOTA & SST are 100% DSA.

By the way, nothing wrong with your question. It's a fair ask. Given the credentials of some of the students, one has to wonder why they'd pursue a DSA entry since many can enter those schools with ease. I've asked that before but now that it's my DS' turn, I can see why the DSA entry has its merits.

The exposure and experience in DSAing is priceless.
For our case, it is my son's first job interview and they are learning practical skills to present themselves and articulate it well. I prepped him for his DSA interview, through this bittersweet exercise, I realized that on a soft skills part, he is very raw. A lot to work on and that's the more important part of education. Whether or not he gets offered, I think we have both gained in this exercise.
Of coz, I pray that he gets a CO.
It will definitely take the pressure off PSLE raw score. He finished his interview yesterday and was happy. I think he has learned and gained something intangible. -
Thank you for all the clarification. I also has the same fear for psle (ours is next year), but I also feel that dsa is quite stressful, not sure my DD can go through the process, in addition to the possibility that need to face disappointments. So wondering whether we should spend time in dsa preparation or just put all time focus in psle preparation.

DSA also gives the opportunity for the kids to visit the school when they go for the test/interview and have a feel of whether they like the school, the students or teachers, considering now that a lot of schools are still doing e-open house.
That could serve as a motivation as well for them to study hard if they like a certain school.
My son’s target school changed after he went for the DSA test/interview.
