Teaching Chinese at Home

Hi Tamarind,
thanks.I will do demo do my k1 child as i go on to the next few chapter.
Will watch out for his memory pattern too.
Best regards.tamarind:
Lynn2,
When the child completes book 2, I think he/she will know more words then what is necessary for CL2 in primary 1.
It is important to make sure that the words sink into long term memory. If a child learns all the words in a chapter in one day, ask him to read the same words again the next day. Can he still remember the words ? Then try again on day 3 and so on.
We know that the words are in the child's long term memory if he can still remember how to read after he stops practicing for more than one week.
Every child is different, parents need to find out what is the \"memory pattern\" of their kids. There is a section in book 1 that explains this.
Read this English article for more information :
http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/374487/memory/275817/Patterns-of-acquisition-in-working-memory
BTW, I don't just ask my boy to read. I try to demonstrate the action, ask him to perform the action, or let him touch the real object. That really helps him to remember the words, and he does not mind repeating the actions. -

Hi tamarind,
Does book 7 of siwukuaidu teach new words?
Book 7 mainly teaches new words using 字族字, which are groups of words that share the same parts, like 巴, 爸, 把, 芭. It is mainly a reference of groups of words. When I was a student, I used to learn new words this way, on my own initiative, by looking at the Chinese dictionary and looking for words that have the same parts. I actually enjoyed learning this way.
But I don't recommend using book 7 to teach kids who are below 6 years of age. I would suggest that after book 6, parents teach kids to read interesting Chinese story books to let them practice the words that they have learned as well as learn new words. More importantly, reading good books will develop a love in the language. Once the child has a strong interest in the language, they will love to look at Chinese characters, and they will find the words in book 7 interesting and will take the initiative to learn the words. I know this seems hard to believe, but I am speaking from my own personal experience. I still enjoy looking at Chinese words in the dictionary now
My P1 girl tells me that she dislikes hanyu pinyin, she likes to look at Chinese characters, sometimes she can tell me that if we add/remove a certain 部首 to a word, it becomes another word.
However, if a child who is below the age of 6 is interested to read book 7, then parents should certainly explain the concepts to him/her. If the child has no interest, parents should leave the book till much later. I think in Singapore, book 7 will be only be useful for kids who are P5 to P6. -
