Handmade notes by student for Year 1 HCL - covering all the \"must-know\" technical terms for rhetoric approaches. A little cluttered cos she squeezed everything in page but pretty comprehensive. 😄

Question on CL / HCL in Secondary school. For schools that impose a minimum grade in CL O Level (taken in Sec 3) to take HCL O Level in Sec 4, what is the rationale? Is it if you score below B3 (or whatever each school’s threshold is) in CL, they don’t think you can clear the HCL Uni requirement of D7? Or, they are trying to get you a better CL grade so you have more options with the L1R5 calculation?

If the latter, it seems like a student by student review would make more sense than a blanket policy? I.e. some students may be able to get B4 in CL and D7 in HCL and still have a strong L1R5 score due to other subjects. At the same time, no need to take MT in JC and if the HCL grade is C6 or better than 2 bonus points for L1R5 calculation.

I also wonder what the rationale is, for imposing a min CL grade (way above passing grade) before one is allowed to continue with HCL in sec 4, and for imposing a min HCL grade that is above D7 before one is allowed to drop H1 CL in Jc when the actual official criterion is D7.

Maybe looks better on the school’s KPI/reporting.

I think it kinds of set the tone and get the students to up their tempo.

Components in CL Paper 2 are generally "easier" to score then HCL ones (more MCQ, no editing section & summary question). Paper 1 weightage for CL is also lower than HCL. For CL, there are also LC and passage reading for Oral.

B3 is 65-69% and B4 is 60-64%. If a student can’t achieve B grade for CL, then it’s going to be quite a struggle for HCL.

As for schools that set higher min. grade, they probably factor in the profile of their intake’s command of CL and school’s language/cultural setting.

                        Hi chenlaoshi

Do you know where we can find a consolidated list of common terms used in Chinese oral?
