It is heartening to hear many KSP kiddos do give their parents an allowance!

My 16yo DD1 worked part-time as a sales promoter for 3 months some time back before starting school in Jan. She gave DH and I, $100 each, every month.

Thus, 感恩心, is something that can and should be taught to all our kids!
It is great, your DD gives money to parents even for part time jobs. The 感恩心, should extend to people surrounding, like siblings, teachers in school and classmates, etc.

Buying a car makes no sense in Singapore, with the mrt being available practically everywhere now. You may think that having a car saves you time... but if you factor in the cost of owning a car, buying gas, paying road tax, parking, summons, etc... it really makes no sense for the \"time you saved\". Better to invest in a pair of nice wireless headphones, and play with your phone on the MRT. I find it more relaxing to travel without a car.
I think different situations will call for different decisions. My comment about not buying a car was addressed to the topic that was being discussed - young people just starting out in their careers when money is tight, and they have no young kids or seniors to ferry around.

i think it depends on how disciplined the person is at the point of time .
after married, paying off all big tickets like honeymoon, renov, wedding . dh n me also saved 70% too , housing is fr CPF.
initial yrs, we went humble resorts for holidays , so our nest can save up faster..
Agree. Discipline is Impt & need to be inculcated early in life.

When I started working, I didn’t need to focus on getting insurances as back then, not many of us value the benefits of insurance coverage. Hence, I resolved to save most of my earnings & top my increment every year (after spending on yearly holidays).

Subsequently, I’ve to pay for mortgage loans, hence, hardly hv any savings & no holidays till after I did my masters & moved on to diff roles.

I guess I’ve to be more forgiving as future generations of our children will hv to bear with higher cost of living, inflation & lifestyles. Hope the basic value system imbibed thro’out our parenting can help them balance their priorities & shower some care to their elderly parents in time to come. Nvetheless, I’ve to keep sufficient retirement funds in the event there’s cause for not burdening our kids or their newly setup families. I believe it wld not be easy for young couples in the future.

I also believe it will not be easy for young couples. Hence, am also thinking if instead of them giving us an allowance, let them save the money for investment. The earlier they start investing, the better.

At the same time, am also aware that if they do not already have the habit of giving an allowance, then there is a risk that they may be unwilling to give if we should need their help.

They are good and caring kids now but hearts can change.

I would use a different calculation. What % was the $1300 of your husband's salary at the time? Then apply that % to your kids' salaries.
You are right. I checked with DH, he shared that the $1300 allowance his mum asked for was around 1/3 of his starting pay back then.

So as a proportion it should be around $1666 and not $2600, assuming my kids’ starting pay can reach $5K.

After we got married, MIL no longer helped DH save, so MIL’s allowance was reduced from $1300 to $300. The money saved earlier was used for our wedding and our down payment for the matrimonial house.

$1600 sounds more manageable! And about $1200 would be their \"savings\". Your husband's salary was high! But not sure when that was. When my husband and I started work in 1986, there had been an across-the-board salary reduction because of a recession. My starting salary was $1600, and my husband's $2K+.

I rmbr I took up my first job to fill my time before Uni & it was only $450pm before I got enticement to stay abit longer with $500pm. But I make sure they know I’m leaving for my studies at specific date. Ya, we get OT, plus meals & tpt reimbursements too.

Last few years, heard fr some of my frds their kids cldn’t find internship & some can’t find local ones rather go overseas & hv to find their own internship & pay their way thro for airfare & accommodations.
