DSA 2022

Hi all,
This is my boy’s profile:
1) one of the Gep primary schools but not in gep.
2) Consistently scoring mid 90s for science since P3.
3) Consistently in top 25% in sch since p1.
4) E2k science since P4
5) Piano grade 8, tkd junior black belt , ice skating ( tries many activities but not master of any )
6) Did some self initiated science projects in end p5 and P6.
7) Took part in some math MO in p5. Some better results like high distinction and honourary mention
Took part in only 1 SO and didn’t do well.
I would say my son is pretty average relative to those who are doing many olympiads so we are really surprised and count our blessings to be given a chance. He has worked hard to prepare for interview, he is definitely doing well in Science and can grasp the understanding well but no Olympiads results to validate that. I did not make him join Sci Olym , the questions that I have seen are mostly secondary school questions from those books in popular. And I believe he can internalise them well when he progresses up.
He probably did well in selection test and interview.
Some tips :
1) Read widely on science related stuffs, many interesting videos on you tube and not just Sci O questions.
Eg Pythagorean’s cup
2) Keep abreast with recent Science Technology like cultured meat, important to read newspapers ( I mean the parents too so you can share with the kids)
3) Show self initiative.
4) Prepare for the interview.
I think he probably stands out through the selection test activities and interview.
Hope these tips help.
All the best to the rest waiting for results! Whatever it comes, let’s still work hard for Psle. Mine just had a bad dream that he didn’t do well for science and he woke up in cold sweat :scared: and looked for me this morning. He is feeling the stress to make sure he meets cutoff of HCI. -

That's very impressive. Based on what you've shared, I think your boy is certainly not just average but a high performer. I appreciate that all parents (myself included) will always think that our kids are so-so but your boy's performance is evidence otherwise. Congrats on the CO!

:congrats: to (genice & son)
Just received HCI academic science CO.
Can your son recall roughly that day when he took the Hwa Chong DSA Science test, approximately,
how many short-listed candidates were there present for Science test, that day ? Thank you -
Hi all,
I am such a noob to ksp. How to reply to a msg. I can’t see any reply button.

Anyways, congrats on the CO and thank you for more details on your boy. Best of luck for PSLE; I'm sure he will do well in HCI regardless. -

Hi phttp,
I estimate there were about 50-60 kids. There were about 5 rows of around 10 kids each, math has almost double the number. I am wondering how many they offered for Sci. -

Actually, my heart feel pain because your DS (an eleven year old boy) is feeling the stress up to the level where he had a bad dream and woke up in cold sweat. Since he already has a CO from HCI academic Science, should he be more relax now?

I agree. Even if other 3 subjects score AL6 each, that’s 18 + AL2 for Science, still total AL20, the CO will still be honoured. Can relax the stress level. A bit too tight for his health.

My best guess is that they typically take in around 40 (+/-) across Math, Science, and Infocomm but I don't know for sure. I have heard of high-teens number of Math COs out of a concentration of schools, so the Math domain total could be 20+.

I think one thing that is different this year is that the shortlisting stage still has immense competition/large number of applicants. Over the past two years (2020-2021) due to online interviews and time constraints, it seems like half the battle was getting through the initial screening/shortlisting phase. This year, it looks like the selection test/interview stage (varies by school whether these are split up or same day) is still often < 50% odds, with many still looking at 4:1 or 3:1 candidates to rough number of spots (no hard \"quota' per se).
Anyways, it is again a big congrats to those who made it! For those that were not as fortune, please keep your head high and work hard for PSLE.
