DS prelim CL picture compo qn:
- some boys kicking soccer on a field
- it started to rain, so they decided to continue kicking soccer at void deck nearby
- old man passing by at void deck was hit by the ball and fell down
- (continue the story)
This scenario is so familiar, we definitely have seen it before, but somehow I couldnt locate the qn in past PSLE papers, nor past prelim papers, nor P5 SA2 papers. Maybe it was in model essay book or tutor’s given hw.[/quote]

Why have to assume the old man will die? For me , I will continue with the boys help the old man up and send him to a clinic to confirm whether he is suffering from any injury. Then the boys will accompany the old man home and apologize to him…The boys have learnt the lesson and will not kick soccer at void deck.

Yea I agree. Typically I thought Chinese comps must be wholesome and exhibit good or moral values kind and must learn from lesson. I think accidents till death is kind of like frown upon. English compo I think can have more free rein.

Update: sorry I misheard my DS. The boys were riding bicycles, not kicking soccer.
Yes, typical ending with the moral is preferred for Chinese compo. -
Yes I would agree on that too, that Chinese compo usually ends with a moral value or a lesson well learnt. 经一事长一智 …. has been very useful for my kids.

Trying to get some views on a Eng compo my child has written. He added a one liner to explain one of the characters was an ex convict, so as to explain why he was being picked on all the time. Just a one liner and one time mention of ex convict. Teacher underlined the word and feedback not tp use it again and was naturally marked down. Is this MOE guideline or just the teacher? I thought this is creative writing and should not be restricted?

What was the topic? Did the teacher explain why should not use the word?

I think in SG, we use ex-offenders rather than ex-convict? That would be a less offensive word as we talked about inclusiveness.

Teacher didn’t explain why to him. Topic was a promise I think. My child wrote the father promised the daughter he will be there for her performance. But due to work employer held him back and make things difficult due to him being ex convict. So he couldn’t make it for the performance and broke his promise. He said he extracted this part from a model compo from his tuition centre… Hahaha

Ex convict sounded like a term used by an adult. A child would use a nicer term. Kids have a better way to paint the picture, esp. comes to their own parents
