We've got CL/HCL Paper 1, waiting CL oral/LC. EL got everything but Paper 1. Not sure what is going on? I was expecting the full lot of everything today...

That’s crazy cos Prelim oral was over ages ago?

We got back Thurs: Math, EL everything except Compo, CL everything except Zuowen.

Fri: Science (corrections gone thru halfway).

Anyway hope everything so far was within expectation.

Tell me about it! I don't know why they can't just give back everything stapled together with a cover sheet:

Paper 1: X / 55
Paper 2: X / 95
Oral: X / 30
LC: X / 20
Total X / 200
--> X% / ALX

Understand the teachers have plenty to do so we can wait another day...

I think it is very hard to say. Paper difficulty (by subject) could vary a bit by school, although in general I think the differences (if there are any) tend to be overblown. Still, some schools bulk up on what has come out in recent years and been hard for the kids to try and give them some practice on these types of questions.

And then there is the issue of nerves and luck. Some could have done well for Prelim and struggle at PSLE and vice versa.

I think it is best to just look at how the child did relative to recent exams (P5 SA2, P6 SA1) and practice (at home or at school). If unfortunately didn't do so well but have a good foundation, then just try to shake it off. For other areas, just try to understand where the child can try to pickup a few more points here and there (better grasp of some 50/50 concepts, clean up efficiency on careless errors, etc).

Also, if my child is around the boundaries, I won't be too excited or too worried either way. The real thing is all that matters.

I'd say that Prelims are a decent gauge of PSLE performance. They usually reflect the student's expected performance but are not intended to be \"final.\"

Many factors can alter actual PSLE performance including the child's demeanor and emotional state of mind during the exams, types of questions and their difficulty level, last minute efforts, the environment and luck. Plus, some students who either have (or don't have) a DSA CO/WL may become more complacent or more focused during the PSLEs. Likewise, those who do well in their Prelims can suddenly take their foot of the pedal and mess up, and vice versa.

So, while it provides a reasonable indication of where the student is, things can change.

As a parent, though, our role is to continue to encourage our kids irrespective of their Prelims. Remind them that this is the last leg of the race and they should remain focused. If they did well during the Prelims, use that as a means to spur them on to do even better. If they did poorly, give them the support to know that they can still improve and that they should not lose faith.

I have heard some experienced tutors say to expect a buffer of +5 or -5 marks for each subject.

Wah, that can move an AL2 to an AL1 or an AL3 (or worse). Quite a broad range.
