It's not that bad compared to the 90s when I first flew solo there. Manage to dig up from my HDD a 30 year old photo showing the old Tokyo metro map which was solely in (vertical) kanji. Caucasians would have a hard time deciphering those characters, but not the Chinese tourists.
I am not so sure that there are English speaking staff always available to help. And precisely there are so many signage’s and languages that it became confusing. I was not in Tokyo nor Osaka then. I was traveling to the outskirts to visit the breweries and if I am
Not wrong, it’s one of those local rail-lines like hankyu or smthg.

After hosting 2004 World Cup, when large nos of Eng-speaking angmoh fans were visiting, they had installed several bilingual and even trilingual signages (Chinese / Korean included). Further improved after the 2020 Olympics.

Granted, those big cities signages are professionally translated and installed by the municipal govt, but I still think it is not a must to know Jap in small Japanese towns and villages for tourists. I also visited the smaller towns.
Google translate app is your best friend in the 21st century! :rahrah: And don't venture off-track from the main tourists belts, like Ajoomma!
Cos some smaller metro stations on Sundays are indeed manned by 100% Jap-speaking ah pek staff. Had this encounter in Nagoya once but cos my tourist destination was TOYOTA museum, Nagoya passersby all know how to point to the right direction! Usually the locals will know where the tourist attractions are. One Sapporo resident even walked us to the Ramen Alley personally as it was snowing heavily. So helpful of the Japs.
But lang barrier should not deter any non-Jap speakers from visiting Japan F&E! It's so easy to navigate around and so fun to travel around Japan!! -

Wow! Planning already? Can't help you as I haven't really been to Japan (only a short work trip decades ago and stopovers). My husband and I are possibly going to visit Japan sometime next year too, but with a friend who used to work in Japan. So leaving him to make the plans and be tour guide!

Great if your daughter is going with you and loves planning. One of my daughters is good at it, but won't want to travel at our pace. The other, who came to Rome with us, doesn't plan at all and just leaves it to me! Anyway, we aren't including them for Japan as it will be 2 old couples (our friend's wife is not very strong so we will be taking things slow and easy).
