Hi, wanted to hear from existing MSHS parents.

Did/do any of your DS opt NOT to take HCL from Sec 1? My son got in through DSA but he struggled with HCL in P4-P5 that we opted to drop it in P6 just to focus on the 4 PSLE subjects.
The FAQ clearly states that it is not compulsory to take HCL, so I am thinking of just continuing to only take CL and not HCL at all since Sec 1, but wondering how much of a minority DS will be? Like the only kid in the class? If he opts to take Bahasa Indonesia as 3rd language, technically he could still get the 2 points for JC instead of using HCL, am I correct, or am I missing something?

Are many of the announcements made only in Chinese and not English (including announcements to parents)?

If your child is able to take up a 3rd language, that means he must have done pretty well in the normal Chinese. IMO, taking up Higher Chinese is just a step up from Chinese, while learning a 3rd language is a major leap.

If your son does not clear HCL by end of Sec 4, when his Mother tongue is Chinese -

if he goes to Poly or IB, no issue.
But,
if he goes to a Junior College, that means he still got to take JC1 (Chinese).

If he chooses Bahasa Indonesian and sit for the O level exam (Bahasa), at the very most, it is still only a 3rd language,
because

Bahasa is Not even his Mother tongue. So, that means
he will still have to continue take JC1 (Chinese),
because
he never even cleared his Higher Chinese, by end of Sec 4.

Perhaps,
can ask your son,
is he aware of this ?
If he is aware, next followed up question is,
so,
does he still want to keep doing JC1 (Chinese), assuming that he chooses SG-A-level path ? Because your son ultimately is the one who is studying. Thus, he ought to be the one, making the decision.

Because i am taking the same leaflet (example or analogy) out, from those IP students studying inside Hwa Chong / NYGH, who die-die must clear their HCL, by the end of Sec 4, even if they have taken a 3rd language (be it French / Jap / Spanish, etc). Otherwise,
Hwa Chong JC students will still got to continue keep taking JC1(Chinese).

For more background, one set of grandparents speaks Indonesian, so he has been exposed to Indonesian for parts of his life, though mainly spoken, never proper writing or reading. Grandparents would repeat sentences once in Indonesian then once in English essentially, so he understands bits and pieces, and so learning Indonesia won’t be from absolute zero.


While DS takes CL, we are absolutely a non-CL speaking family, so all his efforts are truly through his ownhard work. He averages AL4/5 for CL, not fantastic to most but to me, it is huge achievement since he has no home support and learned mainly from school and tuition. I saw his struggle with HCL in P4/5 getting at most in the 30-40s, and so I am doing a pros/cons list of all our options.

I guess my question is is it even possible to pass HCL given that you only get AL4/5 for CL. I know DS’s classmate whose parents are from China and still barely passing HCL, so I just wonder what chance does DS have then lol
