DD’s braces cost me over $6K her’s not so straight forward, involved surgery to remove some impacted teeth.
DS doesn’t need braces but he had Leong’s premolar which was filed down and filled when he was in Pr sch but think the filling came off and the roots got infected leading to the teeth dying. Did a stem cell regeneration procedure to revive the 2 premolars and that also cost over $6k. -
Guess I am not a very savvy landlord.

Anybody goes to KCuts?
The hairdresser told me no news about price hike for CNY ie still $12. -

AVA has a very comprehensive food safety system in place. All importers need to have a AVA license as well as import permit to bring in food items. While there are isolated incidents of illegal imports, the same illegal imports are as likely to make it to your supermarket as the neighborhood shops.
There are many neighbourhood shops selling fruits & vegetables. I found them very much cheaper than mkt or NTUC/SS, and was told by the sellers their fruits are fr M’sia. Now that we’re having this conversation, I realized many might be brought in by small operators fr M’sia/Indo. Not sure if they’ve licence = AVA checks. I recall some operators were caught & charged gor not having the licence to bring farm produces into SG & the pesticides level way surpass approved levels 😬 I’m glad part of my veggies come fr my garden but since I’ve to supplement my family’s needs, will buy fr mkt or supermkts instead of those neighbourhood shops. Don’t wish my family to ingest unknown levels of chemicals long term.
The only reason why neighborhood shops is cheaper is mainly due to cutting off the “middlemen” costs. They do not have warehouses (compared to the huge cold stores that the supermarkets have), and they do not have to factor in the marketing executive’s, the finance executive’s, the HR executive’s etc salary into every item they sold. Most of these neighborhood shops are mom and pop operations with less than a headcount of 10. -
The reason why I do not buy fresh veggies and fruits from neighbourhood grocers is simply that they usually display them at room temperature. Some of them even the whole day steeping in the hot afternoon sun albeit under shelter. I’d rather pick those that have been sitting in aircon comfort in supermarkets as those dont turn bad as quickly.

My experience is the opposite of yours.
I find that fruits and vege from wet markets are fresher and stay fresh longer than those from supermarkets even though they are displayed in the open.
Lately I find that CS chiller at the outlet that I frequent are too cold for the salads and lettuces. Many a times, the vege seem to show signs of chiller burns. -
Actually, both of you are correct

Neighborhood shops lack a cold store (and a back office). Hence, they can only display them as soon as the veg arrive, and at room temperature. This makes them harder to keep fresh for a prolong period of time. However, if you are one of those who buy the veg as soon as they arrive in the neighborhood shop, it will be the freshest option (short of plucking them from the garden).
For supermarket, they have at least one cold store or chiller (typically 2, at different temp) in the back office. Hence, they can bring out and restock the veg at different time of the day and to give that appearance of freshness. -

Ya, lower cost w/o middlemen. I’m seeing more Vietnamese stall owners. They’re always busy re-stocking & fast in checking customers’ items. Hi find their stock very fresh in my neighborhood.
