That's a tricky question since much depends on the student and the school he/she has DSA'd into. If the student does struggle, it's hard to say if that is due to the IP program or whether the sports demands are excessive or if there are other external factors.

What I do know is that some schools (perhaps many schools) which have admitted students via the DSA route actually monitor the students' performance and will step in if they see that the student is struggling. Transitioning into secondary school is a challenge in and of itself, what more when the student is expected to perform in an extra-curricular activity. Yes, I believe that the expectation is that the student performs. So the pressure on the child is higher which warrants closer monitoring and intervention from the school, if things start to wobble.

That said, I also know of students who do really well as they enjoy the academic program and are passionate with their sport. They thrive because they are given an opportunity to showcase their capabilities. They also appreciate the facilities and exposure provided by the school so it's ultimately a win-win scenario.

But, as I said, much depends on the student and the school. It's not always a perfect match which is why I think engaging with the school early is key. You need to know what the DSA approach, program, support etc. are like and only proceed with eyes open 🙂
Agree!! Depends a lot on the child's academic abilities & learning attitudes .
& tbh, very very few parents share on \"failure\" cases
(For obvious reasons!), so many thought ok la,strike lottery ,just take lor.. but if they do not \"know\" their kids \"well\",they may be sending the kids to 4-6years of struggles, can end up getting a low self-esteem kid(I saw real examples),I think this is so unwise..

& fyi not all schools bother to monitor kids who dsa into schools which are much better than their psle score & render help when kids need obviously...
Don't leave this to luck & regret!

I know of 1 real case..not even IP,but is a good neighbourhood school, ard cop 243..1 child dsa in using sports, psle score 200,just make it to express ..fail maths all the way to sec4,other subjects also weak, but need to take 2× Pure science as combined science is not offered,so even though failed both pure science at end sec3, not able
To change to combined science..end up, for this yr o level,\"drop\" pure chem & Amath, never go for exam..
& low-self-esteem, avoid talking to friends as they are mostly smarter, through the 4 years! I feel if the child went to a school which is just a bit better than own psle score, would have been able to bring out academic potential much better...

Another case I know is,gal from Nanyang pri,got 250 can go Nygh with affiliation, but parents decide not to let their gal go,coz they feel is not a good fit, though her gal took HCL at psle, but she is not so good & they feel she does not suit IP,& prefer to go another mission co-ed school..& is doing well there!!
        With leadership opportunities etc..

So key is: KNOW your Child's learning abilities & character well..if a child feel inferior easily, then I feel should not go to a school which is much better thru DSA, as there is a high chance the child may \"break\" easily, emotionally..
& very stressful to commit to the sports cca & manage the higher demands in academic..
Key is: a child need to be Happy, then can be confident of themselves, & able to face challenges bravely & positively.

Oops! Pardon for long sharing:) hope this helps!
        All the BEST!
