I have a question: What is the real advantage of getting into an O-level program in MGS or SCGS? Considering the school fee of 3xx, Is it completely special from the offering from neighbourhood schools? I know many students from Swiss cottage - thoroughly enjoying the course, getting exposures to lot of talent developments etc., plus getting stellar results in O-level program and got into top 3 JCs. Just contemplating, as my DD has AL8 and rare chances of getting into SCGS IP, I am not sure whether it is worth to join SCGS / MGS O program!!

As an SC student, I think it is worth a try. Quite a few of my ip schoolmates scored eight too, though I have a friend who got balloted out at eight for first choice, but she isn’t a Singapore citizen. I just it just depends on luck atp. All the best!
my DD scored AL 8 without HCL and we stay in the east
1. SCGS IP (COP 7-8)
2. SCGS O (COP 7-8)
3. CHIJ SNGS O (COP 5-9)
4. AHS (COP 4-12)
5. TKGS (COP 8-13)
6. ...
SCGS IP worth the try? any comments/advice much appreciated. thanks -

Not advantage per se, some girls or parents prefer girls school, proximity or travel distance.

Also MGS has SBA enriched program for students with AL8 or less and affiliation to Acjc, tho not your definition of top jc, still decent.
Edited: please do check with sch directly about SBA, as its info cannot be found in website currently. -

1) Swiss Cottage Secondary no doubt churn out stellar O level results, but no affliation to any Junior College, after O level. No safety net.

2)
MGS (O-level), in contrast, is affliated to Anglo-Chinese Junior College, whose L1R5 Cut off point may not be easy to get in, for some students. In other words, having an affliation to a decent, good enough JC, is better than nothing.
ACJC is not an easy JC to enter, if a JAE student's L1R5 doesn't qualify or cannot meet the official Cut off point (ACJC).
3) MGS (O-level), in Lower Secondary 1 and 2,
for certain students who did well in Maths and Science,
eg. Those scored AL1 for (Maths & Science),
are offered some very good Talent development programme. This type of Science Talent programme inside MGS, is very different from that offered by Swiss Cottage Secondary. You can contact VP (Academic) in MGS Secondary, to find out more about it, if u are interested to pursue more.
After u find out, after spoken to the VP (Academic), then u decide for your kid : which type of Science Talent development programme exposure, do u think is better or more suitable, for your daughter ?
3) both MGS and SCGS are All Girls schools.
As a parent, if u disliked \"co-ed\" schools just in case BGR (boyfriend girlfriend relationship) develop when your daughter is in her teenager years for the next 4 years (from aged 13 to 16), hence causing un-necessary distraction to her O-level studies preparation, then better stick to All Girls' schools.
If your daughter happen to meet boys outside of school premises, eg. During Cca activities that involved other Secondary schools joining in for the same Cca activities, that Is a different story, altogether.
4) SCGS is a school, with many kids from well-to-do families. In fact, only minority stay in HDB flats, while the majority stay in (condo / landed property).
If refer to history,
who founded SCGS ?
Is those very rich Peranakan families.
Of course, in today context,
not all students studying inside SCGS are Peranakan. However, if u look at SCGS students' family background profile, many of them come from well-to-do families. In fact, if u stay in a HDB flat, u fall into the minority group, esp. From SCGS primary school.
Sometimes, parents enroll their daughters into SCGS,
so that
when they grow up into career working women, they can continue to \"network\" with their fellow SCGS class-mates / school-mates.
Sometimes, even parents themselves, also network amongst themselves, in SCGS. Are u aware that there are some parents who group together, at times go for afternoon High tea.
Is the same reasoning, same analogy -
why there are parents who so desired to enrol their sons into RI or ACSI. Is in the name of playing the game, called \"social networking\". -

thank you for sharing. May i check those schoolmates who got in with AL8, were they from SCGPS or did they take HCL? just wondering if priority is given to some or pure balloting.

For SCGS IP, there is no priority (affiliation or HCL); posting will be done based on Citizenship, Choice, Ballot tiebreakers.

For SCGS O, SCGS Primary girls will retain priority if they tried SCGS IP (first choice) and were ballot out (i.e .had AL8) but kept SCGS O as their second choice. In this case, they will be given spot in SCGS O based on affiliation (met AMR of AL17). -

SCGS primary Is affliated to their SCGS Secondary. What is their Affliation COP ? Is it AL 17 ?
thank you for sharing. May i check those schoolmates who got in with AL8, were they from SCGPS or did they take HCL? just wondering if priority is given to some or pure balloting.
( correct me, if I am wrong, if it is not AL 17)
The Affliation rule says that -
As long as an SCGS pupil is still able to meet her Affliation COP, she can still come back to O-level (SCGS), if she so desires.
Example
Even if this SCGS P6 student were to say, fail her Chinese (pu-hua),
Eg.
say, scored AL 8 for pu-hua Chinese subject alone, but say, happen to have scored AL 1 for
(English, Maths, Science),
Total, how many ?
(8 + 1 + 1 + 1) is equal to
Total AL 11.
Does AL 11 still meet AL 17 ?
(Affliation SCGS COP)
Yes, 11 still lesser than 17.
So, can this SCGS pupil still come back for O-level, under affliation, even though she had failed Chinese ?
Yes, of course, she can.
This AL 8, you mentioned,
is only for Non-affliated students' Cut off point. Not applicable to SCGS primary students returning back to their O-level, under affliation privilege.
=============================
Qn
In order to come back to SCGS (O level), how should SCGS P6 students put their first 2 choices ?
To retain Affliation advantage (privilege), they must put SCGS back at Top of the list, as their first 2 choices.
A) if want IP, then put
1) SCGS (IP)
2) SCGS (O level)
B) If want only O-level, don't want IP, then put
1) SCGS (O level)
2) name some other Secondary school ... -
