How is the culture and academic standard of Bowen?
-
4 years ago we chose this school base on passing rate to JC and poly, ie 100% passing rate to poly. Being a neighborhood school with this standard is acceptable to us. Teachers are very committed and will follow up with you if the kids did not submit their homework. We have no regret going to this school and DS is in poly now. Most important is the school did not give up on students easily.

This school's reputation used to be not so favourable during my time as a student. But now it is improving. While another school in Hougang is getting worse.

Anyone going Bowen sec 1 2024?

My girl is currently in Bowen Sec. Experience at the start of school was ok, she enjoyed the orientation camp, made some nice friends. Towards mid of Term One, everything changed - The class mates are nasty and mean, labelled her "suck" just because she does not have a liking for Korean Pop. Fyi, my child plays piano and prefers classical music to pop songs. She has been tolerant towards her classmates since Day One.
For some reason, the friends whom she met at the start of school started to outcast her, deliberately leaving her out of any group work, refused to talk to her, even during the discussion. When my child went to find out if she had done anything to these friends that may have offended them, she realized the issues were minor, such as a mere glance and look away on one of the friends’ handphone, which I think anyone of us would also have done in public. Because of this, she thought maybe if she apologises for this unintentional act, everyone would be friends again, but nope. The apology was not accepted. The group of friends went on to badmouth behind her back, resulting in the entire class bearing some unknown grudges against her.
During the PTC with the form teacher, I, as the parent, brought up such issues, including how the teachers of the class used vulgarities on the students. The form teacher (Mrs. Adeline Lee), to my dismay, turned her back and walk away without allowing me to complete what I wanted to feedback. This gave me a very clear signal that this teacher is not receptive to feedbacks for improvements. All she wanted to hear were comments that praise. For goodness sake, we parents are not here to sugar-coat words to make ugly things look nice. When there are issues of concerns we felt should be highlighted, teachers should be open-minded to listen and try to improve things.
Talking about the teachers, especially
1) History lesson - my child asked the Teacher, Ms. Shamira, when is the deadline of the homework? The answer to my
child was "Wah lau eh, like that also need to ask me!" And, the teacher walked away. By the way, this teacher
teaches in a monotonous and boring way.
Curriculum:-
Alternative Assessment (AA) - another method for weighted assessment (15%) counted towards the overall reported grades. These are either done individually (a written assignment that students can refer to notes, do research, etc), or a project work with classmates. Classmates are not the least interested in doing the group work. Given two weeks to work on and nothing has been done. So, yes, my child failed. Or rather, a BIG FAT ZERO, because no one would budge when my child was so enthusiastic about doing the project. Obviously, AA is a damn lousy way to test students’ progress.
Term Assessment (TA) - pen and paper. These are the written papers. Believe it or not, what the kids study and taught in class were useless. The paper which was given to the students was out of syllabus. Science, Math, both. I personally let my child’s tuition teacher look through the papers, and she also honestly commented "The questions tested were out of syllabus. Shouldnt be tested at all." This explains why my child failed despite being so well prepared.
HBL - BWSS has one to two HBL per month, where students need to complete work on SLS. Simple thing to do online right? You are wrong. Just Math assignment alone, is a hefty 90 questions split into 9 sections, and those topics have yet to be taught in school. So, we thought the teachers will go through the topic in class. Again, dream on. Whatever the kids did on SLS is considered being "taught" the topic, and the teacher will simply move on to the next topic. WHAT IS THIS MAN!
If you have the intention to put your child in Bowen, good luck to you. -

Have things improved in Bowen Sec? Am thinking of appealing to get my DD into Bowen. But your detailed feedback on Bowen makes me wonder if I am making the right decision.
