          a) What was the distance from Town A to Town B?
          b) If the distance between Town B and C was 440km, what was Kenny’s average speed?

          Given answers
          a) 240km
          b)80km/hour

          Q18) Aisha, Bala, Cindy and Dannyt went to buy a gift for Miss Emily. They shared the cost equally among themselves. However, Danny forgot to bring his money. So his friends paid for the gift first.

                Hi everyone

                Need help with this question - P5 level:

                The ratio of $5-notes to 20-cent coins in Mr Tan’s counter was 19:5. Mr Tan exchanged 15 of his $5-notes for some 20-cent coins. The ratio of the $5-notes to 20-cent coins then became 1:5. What was the total value of $5-notes and 20-cent coins at first?

                Thank you in advance.

                    Find the area of rectangle ABCD.
                    Area of ΔABE+Area of ΔCDE=Area of ΔAED+Area ofΔEBC
                    Since ΔABE&ΔCDE have common base and ΔAED&ΔEBC have common base.

                    Area of ΔABE+Area of ΔCDE=50% of Area of rectangle ABCD
                    Since Area of ΔCDE = 30% of Area of rectangle ABCD,
                    Area of ΔABE = 50%-30%=20%
                    20%=80 cm² (Given that Area of ΔABE=80 cm²)
                    100% = 80 cm² x5 = 400 cm²
                    Area of rectangle ABCD = 400 cm²

                    Note: Pls wait for other members to upload the diagram of the question as it is not easy to work without the diagram.

                    Mrs Lim
                    7 hours -> 1 dress
                    3 hours -> 1/7x3 = 3/7 dress

                    Mrs Tan
                    3 hours -> 1-3/7 = 4/7 dress
                    1 dress -> 3x7/4 = 21/4 = 5.25 hours

                    For Mrs Tan to sew 1 dress by herself, she will need 5.25 hours

                    b) If the distance between Town B and C was 440km, what was Kenny's average speed?
                    From 8 a.m. to 10.30 a.m., time lapsed = 2½ hours
                    (90 km/hx2½h)+15km = 240 km
                    (a) Distance from Town A to Town B = 240 km

                    Distance from A to C =(440-240)km = 200 km
                    since it was given that distance between Town B and Town C = 440 km
                    Average speed of Kenny = 200 km÷2½h = 80 km/h

                    How much did Danny return to
                    a) Aisha?
                    b) Bala?
                    C : A+B
                    3 : 5
                    Total price for the gift = (3+5)u = 8u as Danny had forgotten to bring his money.

                    A : B : C : D
                    2 : 2 : 2 : 2

                    A+B= (2+2)u = 4u

                    Danny returned $24 to Cindy
                    (3-2)u= u = $24

                    Bala paid $10 more than Aisha
                    (5-4)u= u
                    Amount of money that Aisha paid for Danny = $(24-10)÷2=$7
                    (a) Amount of money returned by Danny to Aisha = $7

                    $(10+7)=$17
                    (b) Amount of money returned by Danny to Bala = $17

                      Hi Hifive,
                      This method is from http://www.onsponge.com/forum/35-thinkingmathonsponge.html, not sure whether it is suitable or not.Pls wait for other members to post model solution.

                      Exchanged 15 of his $5-notes for some 20-cent coins, number of 20-cent coins = (15x5) divided by 0.20 = 375 each of 20-cent coins.

                      $5 : 20¢
                      19u : 5u
                      -15 : 375
                      1p : 5p

                      $5 : 20¢
                      95u : 5u
                      -75 : 375
                      5p : 5p

                      95u-75=5u+375
                      90u=450
                      u = 5

                      At first
                      Number of $5 notes = 19u = 19x5 = 95
                      Number of 20-cent coins = 5u = 5x5 = 25

                      At first
                      Value of 95 each of $5 notes = 95x$5 = $475
                      Value of 20-cent coins = 25x$0.20 = $5

                      Total value of $5-notes and 20-cent coins at first = $(475+5) = $480
