Just head over to Reddit if people want a more nuanced opinion about school culture rather than read a bunch of senseless, toxic comments here. The pre-U/undergraduates over Reddit are much more mature and helpful than some of the 40-60++ year old people here, who are supposed to role models for children, but are acting like trolls with their meaningless attacks.


PS: The moderator has removed my earlier post on how I was criticizing some of the troll commenters in this forum and these people are influencing this digital space in a bad way. I’ve said what I want to say and shared my experiences, and I’m leaving here. I hope less people will bum to this place just to read through all the horrible replies here and be influenced by these views without critically thinking over them.

This is not a philosophical discussion. It is the truth : we are the very first victim of our own anger, does not matter who is right or wrong . Just recall the sensations in your body when you are angry. So be mindful of this when you are angry. We may not be able to get rid of anger completely and it’s not healthy to suppress anger too, but at least try not to let it grow.

NYJC is 3rd ahead of VJC, EJC, DHS …..

The society today is still very fixated on grades and rankings. Think it will still be same many years down the road. Anyway we have to remember that being in a brand name school doesn’t mean I will be fantastic by default. Similar, being in a neighborhood school also doesn’t mean that I cannot be fantastic either.

Thank you for your kind words. I'm not a parent, working now and I'm in my thirties. I can only contribute by speaking from my prior schooling experience, which won't be very relevant actually; those recent and ex-students over at Reddit are way more qualified than I and are doing a much better job in sharing their personal school experience/culture.

Another thing I want to add is the general attitude of young students nowadays is different from the old Boomer/Millennial generations and even my generation. Ours we keep emphasizing lots on brand name, but the new generation focuses much on pursuing life satisfaction and passion; the current young generation would like to grow in a caring and diverse environment more than us do. Back during my time 10-20 years ago I used to hear people making nasty generalizations like poly and local uni non-science/tech programs (eg NUS FASS) are dumping grounds for non-academically inclined. Nowadays we see more good students choosing poly and arts/humanities routes (resulting in better COP in these courses over the years), instead of traditional med/law/engineering etc, because more students want to do what they love instead of what makes the most $$$. The SG education landscape has evolved greatly after I left SG with more new interdisciplinary uni courses set up like what other western countries are emphasizing, and I hope more parents can understand the change we are seeing here.

There is nothing wrong to ask once or twice for something. But it is rude to force something out of someone. If the sch has choose to keep mum, we should respect the school’s decision. Can only guess this is a way to care for the teaching staff and students.
Tried reading from RV and ACJC websites. No stats were provided this year, only profile of selected students.

To the defenders, there are many types of readers and most of us can discern.

I always find SG being small, has very limited choices esp come to JCs.


Know kids at 13yo, already got their individual book published for charity. Can guess which top sch they ended up in.

Next, for kids into chinese, sap sch gives the impression of too much rules abiding but through community spirit is also a way to produce good results.

How wonderful if there is an alternative to the traditional top jc. For kids who are none if the above types.

Bring this to a more general chat? It's a good topic to think about.

But really, compared to my time (40 yrs ago), the Singapore education system offers much more scope and variety now. And while some of the changes have not been that good (in my opinion), some are being rectified. So while we can always try to improve things, don't forget the improvements that have already taken place.
