All About Getting Priority Registration
-
jor:
If my grandfather was on the ex Board of Directors of a popular school many many years ago, can i somehow appeal for priority to that school for my kids?
I don't believe your grandfather's relationship with the school will help you in any phases of P1 registration. As the others have said, P1 registration is a transparent process and the schools are limited by MOE's rules.
That said, I believe it might help during an appeal. If you apply for the school but somehow got balloted out, put in an appeal and let the school know of this relationship. I do believe that many schools value the contributions of their previous Board members and will take this favourably. And if your grandfather or family has existing ties with the school and the current Board, I believe your chances will be even better during the appeal.
Are you applying this intake? Good luck! -

I don't think any school will do that. It will make the registration process less transparent. Don't think there is a way you can \"appeal\" if you are balloted out. If you are allowed to appeal because you are balloted out, we will see throngs and throngs of appeal letters.
What you can do, instead, is to put your child in the waiting list. This is where the school has the freedom to decide who in the waitlist gets priority. -

Sorry, that was what I meant by an \"appeal\" - to put yourself on the waiting list.I don't think any school will do that. It will make the registration process less transparent. The management of the waiting list is by individual school, and the order of accepting applicants from the waiting list, after the registration exercise, is not publicised.
But be prepared to inconvienent the child and to invest in duplicate books & uniforms as the acceptance from waiting list is usually subjected to drop-out and can happen after pri 1 has started. -
All popular schools have a long wait list of students waiting to enter. I did think of putting my daughter on the waiting list of MGS primary and register her for Phase 1 in Pei Hwa next week but chances are slim.
Like what Tankee mentioned, students who are accepted from wait list are in Jan, after you have bought all the uniforms and books from the other school. My son had 1-2 new classmates in 1st week of Jan since P1.
Their parents had to spend extra money :moneyflies: because of buying a brand new set of books and uniforms. -
My DS’s class has a dropout near the end of term 1, and thus a new transfered classmate in term 2.

Oh but I have heard about this ‘appealing’ process. A friend of mine was balloted out of a popular school in phase 2B (she was a pv). So she tried again in phase 2C (they stay within 1km) but still balloted out. In the end she appealed and she got in based on the grounds that she contributed beyond the 40 hours required so the principal somehow gave her son a place.

Forgot to mention, my grandfather also serve on the Board of SHKK during his era. So prob will speak to the people at SHHK to see if they can issue letter. If really cannot, then really no choice.
-
hmm … then either you or your spouse should be a member of SHKK right?
Anyway, if you do go by some string-pulling, best is to keep it to yourself or you may find yourself at the receiving end of some unsuccessful parents.
good luck ! -

I heard of this appeal process when the child got balloted out at 2B. The school also gave the child a place as the parents did 40 hours of PV.
