Hi newbieks, if you don't mind, may I know what are the symptoms that make you/ the child parent worry abt it?
      Here's something that might help:
      https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/attention-deficit-hyperactivity-disorder-adhd/symptoms/

The difficulty is that most people will have varying degrees of such issues from time to time. The main thing to discern is whether it is to the extent that it is affecting their ability to manage the tasks they need to mange their lives (and for children, age-appropriateness of those tasks also has to be considered). They should be exhibiting the issues more than a \"neurotypical\" person. That can be difficult to tell, especially if the family has got used to the person being \"that way\".

Are you looking for private practice or prefer going the public hospital route?[/quote]
Hi, afaik, public hospitals are 'busy'... Which means that, say if you seek the expertise of NUH, when they decide that your condition is 'stable', they will likely transfer you out to say Ng Teng FongGH for follow-up. On top of that, NUH specialists work in teams, such that the psychiatrist whom you see while you are there will not be just one fixed doctor. Of course, as phtthp points out, private is substantially costly.

          MrsKiasu,

You can send private messages quietly, to newbieks. But do not post this type of sensitive qn to newbieks, in an open forum. Because she may not want to answer u.

You need to be sensitive, to the feelings of people.
No worries..no obligation to reply. I can understand.

I always wonder how accurate the diagnosis going to be..just looking at the symptoms (except the hyperactive side), I myself have few ticks already.

Hi, actually my child's situation is pretty similar to what pirate described 1-2 pages back...It is not something 'new' that we know about the child, just that as school expectations advance, the problem seems to have manifested to an extent that perhaps we should really try to understand if child is really just being 'difficult' or how to better support child moving forward. Child's behaviour since young has been pretty similar to what MMM mentioned about her youngest child e.g. always act up and ask do how much more, why must do etc etc.

Oh, I’m not familiar with the processes. I’m asking as I wanted to make the recommendations based on his preference, for public or practice practice. I have friends who are educational psychologist (private and freelance) and also NUH psychiatrist. There may be some considerations in terms of expertise, convenience and cost.

It's fairly accurate as long as the person answers frankly. Usually, there are a quite a few questions (depending on which form of assessment is being used), and the person has to satisfy a minimum no. of the traits to be diagnosed as ADHD. Of course, knowing that there are some issues gives the person (and parent) something to work on even if not diagnosed as ADHD. Also, the older the person is, the more likely they may have learned or been taught ways of coping, which will make their traits seem less severe.

Usually, those diagnosed will be the ones who have significant struggles with the issues, and are finding that it affects their daily functioning or learning. These are people who are trying hard, but can't seem to make it happen, not those who are not really trying.

Thanks newbieks and slmkhoo for the info. I have quite many times got suspicious with my dd too.

But I m kinda quite sceptical on how accurate the diagnosis will be esp that they are older now can control a little better and if there any intervention that can help the child at this stage. But at this very moment I think I will treat it as someone who is more forgetful…she got too pampered by me doing everything for her that causing her to have bad organisational skills now. Will definitely keep it in my heart and monitor her quietly. I don’t know if that is a wrong thing to do.

If it is just being forgetful about stuff in daily life, I dont think i will be too concerned. What I am more concerned with is how to reduce the 'frustration' that I seem to see more often in child these days. It is as if I can see that child is trying to focus but having great difficulty..e.g while trying to focus on a piece of work, the mind can wander off to thinking other things that needs to be done e..g CCA stuff, other school related stuff, homework etc.

Beginning of this year I told dd not to take up any extra stuffs. I accidentally saw her cher message to her asking her consider some test/activities that span over few months. I stopped her immediately. The year when she took up some leadership…from her marks I think all will think if this student attended any lesson in school. I let her take up/accept things that she wants past few years and this year really suffering.

Maybe if you think she cannot concentrate maybe just help her make it lean?
