Somehow feel abit relieved reading this. Maybe I should change the way I look at these. Sometimes I do feel I m giving dds stress by being 'controlling'. Seriously nowadays don't know if they are doing something serious or watching YouTube/play games coz need use the electronic devices so much.

Yup she did mention no time etc.
Parenting is indeed both an art as well as science, some good reads... (in general, not relating to this forum topic though)

From what DS described to me, I dont think it is ASD cos the boy is able to socialize fine outside the classroom. His disruptive behaviours are not the typical stimming or meltdowns of ASD but that he will come up with new ways and means to make his day in class more exciting, less dull for himself. Usually something loud or must throw things here and there. Or tilt his chair and fall over etc. Thankfully not violent towards others.[/quote]
Looks like something needs to be done! If it's not ASD, then it could quite severe ADHD! Perhaps they could try medication.

Unfortunately I don’t know what happened to this particular boy after PSLE as they are not in touch.

But there are other similar cases in my DS’ mainstream secondary school. Slightly less spectacular disruptions but the teachers and the boys are generally quite tolerant towards them. My boy, he himself knows how difficult it is (he had milder symptoms in P1 which lessened over time), so he will just watch as “entertainment” and tell me about such stories at home.

At age 10 he once “tsked” & shook his head at a younger boy (around age 7) at the neighbouring table in a restaurant for falling off his own chair while fidgeting. I told him straight off: “Don’t tsk, you did exactly the same thing at that age!”

This sounds more like ASD (which is often comorbid with ADHD).
I somehow always remember the word executive function(?) mentioned by you several years back. May be connected. Ok..I will read up on ASD.

How do we distinguish for a 8y/o boy who is gifted but bored or has ADHD? It’s a fine line is it?
Can be both also. The two are not mutually exclusive. 2Es (twice exceptional) are more easily overlooked when young because one compensates and hides the other.

Being gifted and suffering from attention deficit can co-exist.

When my DD2 moved on to sec, I don’t know whether it is due to puberty or that the teachers failed to engage her, she and a handful of gepper classmates weren’t doing as well as expected of them. Don’t have the idea that once accepted into gep, ADD/ADHD issues will disappear, it won’t! There are geppers fallen by the side quietly for different reasons. Like those who cannot find the motivation to work hard cos everything is still “so boring”. But life is pretty mundane is it not?

For my DD, I believe her extremely short attention span did affect her performance in school. So I wonder what kind of job can give her excitement everyday (and still fits her interest). Very difficult.

Last week, DD2 was at home so I talked to her about my woes for that day. After 5mins, I can see her eyes starting to drift and in a state of daze already. My hub thinks she lacks empathy but I think it has something due to her extremely short attention span. I can’t tell if her laziness and lack of motivation are also due to her short attention span.

When something triggered them, they can disengage completely. Does that sound familiar?

Dd mentioned that before…about 2 years back that she is able to do that during one of our brief talk. She is by nature more motivated than the younger one. I am actually quite worried about it. But we are happy that she is much happier and in control this year than last year. I have been taking things lightly till towards end of last year.

                      Thanks!
I find myself maybe too controlling in a way too. Dd started telling me when I started nagging at the younger one ..'it is ok..I am sure meimei knows what she is doing..let her do it etc etc.'. Telling me to stop it in a more polite way.
