How do we distinguish for a 8y/o boy who is gifted but bored or has ADHD? It’s a fine line is it?

Can be both also. The two are not mutually exclusive. 2Es (twice exceptional) are more easily overlooked when young because one compensates and hides the other.

When my DD2 moved on to sec, I don’t know whether it is due to puberty or that the teachers failed to engage her, she and a handful of gepper classmates weren’t doing as well as expected of them. Don’t have the idea that once accepted into gep, ADD/ADHD issues will disappear, it won’t! There are geppers fallen by the side quietly for different reasons. Like those who cannot find the motivation to work hard cos everything is still “so boring”. But life is pretty mundane is it not?

For my DD, I believe her extremely short attention span did affect her performance in school. So I wonder what kind of job can give her excitement everyday (and still fits her interest). Very difficult.

Last week, DD2 was at home so I talked to her about my woes for that day. After 5mins, I can see her eyes starting to drift and in a state of daze already. My hub thinks she lacks empathy but I think it has something due to her extremely short attention span. I can’t tell if her laziness and lack of motivation are also due to her short attention span.

When something triggered them, they can disengage completely. Does that sound familiar?

Dd mentioned that before…about 2 years back that she is able to do that during one of our brief talk. She is by nature more motivated than the younger one. I am actually quite worried about it. But we are happy that she is much happier and in control this year than last year. I have been taking things lightly till towards end of last year.

I find myself maybe too controlling in a way too. Dd started telling me when I started nagging at the younger one ..'it is ok..I am sure meimei knows what she is doing..let her do it etc etc.'. Telling me to stop it in a more polite way.

Never mind jobs. I hear they can be very good entrepreneurs or content creators. The boring executive functions can delegate to the secretary or personal assistant.

I somehow always remember the word executive function(?) mentioned by you several years back. May be connected. Ok..I will read up on ASD.

ASD is autism spectrum disorder. I am very sure your daughter doesn't have that - her social skills sound fine! Executive function issues are probably more likely, but there are many possible causes. ADHD is one of them, but many learning disabilities can result in exec function issues. It's just a symptom, so you still have to identify the cause.

Once, for consultation at 8-9yo. Psychologist asked if she was last in class, I said no. Whether she was disruptive during lessons (walked around classroom or excessive talking), I said no. Psychologist said ADHD without “H” is not easy to diagnose as everyone day dreams, just to what extent.

Academic wise, I think she would be able to achieve more if not for her extremely short attention span. I do not have the energy to sit next to her, like how I did in primary school.

Successful example of ADHD is Elon Musk, very creative and many ideas but cannot control his mouth.

Content creators like social media influencer?
Many teens aspired to be one but not my DD2 lol. She said just one wrong post, the fans/society will condemn, that’s the end of her social media career. Lol. Whereas in an office setting, wrong report or get involved in office politics, can still survive, haha.
