Secondary School Chinese

Hi All,

Need some guidance from all experienced parents here. My son is really weak in Chinese.
Now in Sec 1, I had enrolled him to RMSS Chinese but he is saying it’s not effective. I am thinking of changing to another chinese tuition center or even private chinese tutor. Any advice or recommendation, appreciate if you can pm me. Thank you!

You go to the wrong tuition centre, lah !


If u want your kid to learn Chinese well in Secondary school,

don't go
to those tuition centre,

eg. RMSS

that teach almost every single subject. The wrong choice of tuition centre, will lead your kid to nowhere.

You ought to choose those tuition centre, that specialise only in one subject : Chinese, nothing else. Then, your son will do well, in Chinese (subject).

Since u are asking about Secondary school Chinese tuition in the East, actually I staying in the east too,
but my kid don't go to Eastgate (Wang laoshi), although is nearby & convenient.

Instead,
my kid went to Fu lou shou complex (Jiang laoshi).
Nearest MRT station is Bugis.

You can consider sending your son to Jiang laoshi.

At Fu loushou branch (Jiang laoshi) -

1) for Chinese Oral (kou shi) :-

\" Ye \" laoshi prepared students for O-level, very well.


2) for Chinese Paper 1 zuowen and Paper 2 li jie wen da :-

\" Gu \" laoshi prepared students for O-level, very well.

If a child has been scoring around B4-C5 in school HCL exams in Sec 3, how likely to be able to clear O level HCL exam with at least a D7? Is there any national statistics on pass or failure rate available?

I’ve heard of C5, turning into A2/B3 before .. entirely possible if the child continues to work hard and not give up. Try to encourage the child and keep motivating her.

I haven't seen official statistics on % passes for Higher Mother Tongue. The ones related to O-Level that are released by MOE (e.g.: https://www.moe.gov.sg/-/media/files/about-us/education-statistics-digest-2022.ashx) covers:

Regarding the situation you shared, from what I have seen over the years, the chances of getting at least a D7 is ~85%. A few factors/reasons include:

- O-Level HCL Paper 2 are generally easier to handle than those set by schools (e.g. passage content are less complicated to understand, less use of difficult proverbs/phrases)
- D7 allows for marginal failure - i.e. as low as 45 marks; B4 to C5 mark range is from 55-64 marks. To not at least make it for D7 would mean a drop of at least 20 out of 200 marks (Paper 1, Paper 2 and Oral) - that would be rather \"catastrophic\"

MOE (SEAB) had never published any statistics (data) by year,

what's the percentage of O-level (Higher Chinese) students, who scored at least minimum a B3 and above, in their HCL.

What is interesting to me is that:

On Page 74, it shows the % of A level students who passed MTL at H1 level. Seems like it is as spectacularly high as those who passed O level MTL.
