Students taking Higher Chinese in IP

but isn't it not fair...the system should be the same across all schools right? :|
It is important to note that different Sec schools offer very different programmes, especially the independent schools. Some schools (JC) offer different subject combinations which are not available in other schools. For some special MOE programmes, they are available in some schools but not others. Is it not fair? I am not sure, anyway, some say the world is never fairwonderm:
If students pass HCL for O level, they need not take Cl at JC level.
I think some schools such as HCI and RV set higher criteria, just passing is not enough. For HCI, I heard must score a min of B3, otherwise, still have to do CL at JC level.

But in case they don't make it and have to do it, I won't view it as \"punishment\" but another opportunity for them to improve their CL standard. In that sense, it is not unfair. That's how I explained to my boys.

No.
Do the students resit for HCL at O level or do CL at JC level?
You do not re-sit HCL (O-level), because
HCL (O-level) exam is taken only in November month, no time to re-sit
Unlike
pu-hua (O-level),
where u do have a choice :-
to take it in June, or to re-sit for one last time, in November ?
If u did not clear HCL, by the end of Sec 4 -
1) if u are going to a Junior College,
then,
compulsory to take Chinese, in JC (1).
OR
In certain rare, unique JCs like Hwa Chong (example),
as long as u failed to clinche a minimum B3 score in your HCL (O-level) grade, then,
Yes,
u will still need to continue taking Chinese, in JC1 (Hwa Chong).
Apart from Hwa Chong JC, I can't think of any other JC, that behave this way.
2) But, if u are going to or seeking Transfer out of an IP school to a Polytechnic in year 5,
then,
don't have to bother with Chinese anymore.
============================
Take note.
All IP (A-level destination bound) students, at end of Year 4 -
are NOT allowed
to seek Transfer into IB (ACSI / SJI), at beginning of Year 5.
This was what the Principal of ACSI mentioned, as P stood on the stage to address to several (parents + students) attendance seated inside the Auditorium briefing,
held on ACSI Open house day,
dated Saturday morning (15 April, 2023).
If u are an IP student,
MOE expect u
to finish & complete your IP programme faithfully, all the way to end of Year 6, exit point. -

Unless you wish to pursue the Chinese Language Elective Programme (CLEP) or Higher Chinese in junior colleges or Millennia Institute must have obtained an A1 for HCL in their O-levels.

Otherwise it does not directly affect the AL score. The AL score is calculated based on a student's best grades in any combination of six subjects, including English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Mother Tongue, and a sixth subject. -

By end of 1st semester in Year 3, the students can attempt TYS because other than vocabulary mastery, there should be nothing hindering them in answering the questions.

- The earlier they attempt, the earlier they can identify words/phrases β esp. those in cloze passage questions, that they do not know.
- In Year 4, most schools will distribute other schoolβs previous year exam papers, so there will be plenty more materials to practice on
- Will be able to set aside time to:
o\trevise on the 250 idioms
o\tread articles and to pick up info regarding social issues in preparation for paper 1 and oral
o\tto equip themselves with descriptive phrases for narrative writing and/or proverbs & quotes for discursive

does it help
in anyway, to improve your admission entry into universities,
via
the new 2026 A-level
\"maximum 70 Rank points\" system implementation ?
1)
If it doesn't,
then why bother whether
u scored A1
or
scored the lowest minimum D7 passing grade, in your O-level (HCL) ?
I am refering to the brand new 2026 A-level marking system.
Not refering to the current, out-dated, soon to be phased out A-level marking system, by the end of 2025.
2)
But,
if it does indeed help in the uni entrance admission process,
then,
better pay attention to O-level (Higher Chinese) ! -

Don't know about RI.
My son is in Sec 3.
He is doing higher chinese but lacks passion in this subject. He told me that for students doing higher chinese, they will be allowed to sit for a 'national exam' for higher chinese in Sec 4 and if they pass, they can drop mother tongue subject in JC.
Does anyone has any idea on this? Thanks!!
But,
in RGS,
there are some girls who are not comfortable with HCL.
So, they don't take Sec 1 HCL.
Is not that they are exempted from the subject, Chinese.
Is just that from Sec 1, they don't take HCL, since not comfortable.
As such, they are unable to clear HCL, by end of their Sec 4.
So,
when these IP girls move up into RI in year 5, they will still have to continue taking H1 (Chinese).
If students are exempted from HCL, then, is a separate, different story.
==========================
RGS is not a SAP school,
unlike
(Dunman High, River Valley High, Nanyang Girls High, CHIJ St Nicholas Girls' ) Secondary schools.
Thus,
RGS don't impose this strict, compulsory HCL, upon their Sec 1( IP ) students.
