Hi! These are the key dates to take note of for O-levels Higher Chinese Examinations.

      Higher Chinese (Paper 1)
      7/11/2023 at 8am to 10am

      Higher Chinese (Paper 2)

      Source: https://www.seab.gov.sg/docs/default-source/examination-timetable/2023gceoexamtimetable.pdf

When do students start practice doing full TYS papers? Any tips to get an A1? Thanks!

Unfortunately the above exam papers dont come with answer key, so I am asking for help here as i’m coaching my kid myself.

For the qn find the 比喻句, this is asking for the simile, right?

I saw 2 similes in the compre passage, I would have picked either of them:

        “墙上的钟表走得像蜗牛一样慢” and

        ”像一只出笼的小鸟,迫不及待地跑出房间”

        However, my son picked:

        ”手机成了我的玩伴”

Isn’t this a personification rather than simile?

Just trying to understand whether his answer is acceptable. Will they be learning the difference later on?[/quote]

明喻 & 暗喻 are not covered in CL (images below from 1A CL textbook page 10 and 1B CL textbook page 31)

        but is covered in HCL

成了 is one of the 喻词 used in 暗喻

In conclusion, zac's choice can be accepted as a correct answer.

          :yikes:

I didnt realise there is so much to know about these literary techniques. Thanks, chenlaoshi, for spending the time to explain the details!

Just curious, does this type of question come out at O level compre? Or is it more for building up their foundation now in lower sec?

Yes, zac's mum, there will be more along the way when they learn other forms of passages (informative 说明文, discursive 议论文)。

This type of question (i.e. identify sentence(s) using rhetoric approach and/or it's) can come out in O Level compre - although it is not a \"permanent fixture\".

similar types of question that came out (May/June 2018 and May/June 2017 respectively):

example of permanent fixture in compre questions:

If any parents/students need convincing that reading news articles (esp. trending topics & local issues) does help in exam 😉 :

Top: NUS High 2023 Sec 4 WA 1 cloze passage
                Bottom: 早报 article (https://www.zaobao.com.sg/news/singapore/story20230206-1360090)

                https://i.imgur.com/AKQwYTe.jpg\">
More importantly, this serves as a reminder that unlike Pri level cloze passage, the tested scope for Sec level is beyond syllabus words/phrases that are covered in textbooks. Accumulative learning to expand range of vocab is key to handling this section. 😄

                Top: ACS(I) 2023 Sec 3 WA 2 cloze passage

Hi All, I would like to understand whether with the new changes to the Secondary School Chinese syllabus from Year 2021 (I know the textbooks were changed), will the ‘O’ level Chinese paper format be changed too?

I tried to google but can’t find anything. Looking forward to anyone who knows more. Thank you!

                      Hi ry_mummy,

Yes, there is change in format w.e.f. next year.

For CL Paper 2, instead of 10 questions 10 marks for 1st section 综合填空,
it'll be 5 questions 10 marks for 1st section 综合填空 + new section 词语替换.

Weightage of OE compre section is reduced from 40 to 35 marks.

You can read about the details https://www.seab.gov.sg/docs/default-source/national-examinations/syllabus/olevel/2024syllabus/1160_y24_sy.pdf.

There are no changes to HCL's format (https://www.zaobao.com.sg/znews/singapore/story20160724-644867).
