The leading theory in one of the parents chatgroup is that the whole group of 11 students used secondary school algebra for their psle mathematics paper. So that is why all did so badly.

I thought algebra is allowed in the psle mathematics examination?

I think I also want to write to Straits Times.

Parents should be allowed to choose and decide on their kid’s score cos parents know best right? If I say my kid is AL1, how dare educators with years of experience disagree. PSLE should be an arbitrary exercise whereby the results should only be used for reference and not be ultimate factor in determining outcome.

Even for a simple examination, at least 2 markers are involved. They would grade half, then exchange papers, and check the markings for the lot they did not do. I'm sure MOE will have some kind of mechanism to do at least that.

The PSLE is just an exam. There are many more exams to come. Very soon it will just be a faint memory as it get over-shadowed by more complex tests. Even if there was really a mistake, I'd be surprised if MOE admits it as everyone else will be clamoring for a re-mark 😂

Since once u pay $ for a review, SEAB will have to \"re-mark\",

            then
all those who scored AL (3 or 4 or 5 or 6)
            in PSLE (Maths / Science)
can proceed, for a review to be done.

            Why ?

            Because
If those impacted parents really feel the need for a review in order to have some peace of mind, let them do it.

              This theory,
on whether Psle Maths can or cannot accept \"Algebra\" method to be used or not in PSLE Maths working steps, SEAB better clarify out front clearly once and for all, to everybody. After all, primary schools only teach \"Model\" concept.

              Why ?

              Because
if parents & students are not properly informed whether can or cannot use Algebra method,
what do u think will happen, going forward,
in subsequent future PSLE batches (2023 next year or 2024 or 2025 or 2026, etc )?

This same scenario will happen, all over again ! Those students ignorant that Algebra method cannot be used, will start using Algebra method again to calculate, repeat the same mistake that these year's 2022 eleven Nan Hua primary students did. That means, history will repeat itself. So next year's 2023 Psle batch, parents will start to write to Straits Times to appeal, repeat today's history

Is this problem unique to Nan Hua? I don’t think it’s just Nan Hua alone. 11 from 1 class in Nan Hua is not a small number. Earlier Zac’s mum shared that 10+ classmates of her son were affected? Total how many affected? Not sure.

PSLE is not just an exam. It is a nation wide exam where children are sorted into different sec schools based on this results. AL1 to AL5 for 1 subject, there will be an impact.

If it’s just a P3 exam (for example) parents will not write to Straits Times

Not my son’s class, but from a FB support group (PSLE parents from various schools across Singapore). I have no idea about my son’s class as a whole regarding the Math grade.

                      Zac mom,

For those impacted in your son’s school, if can, try to find out whether they also used Algebra method to calculate, instead of using of Model method.
