Hi Questions for Students of RI or any parent with kids in RI..

Do you find it stressful to study in RI?
I am worried that he will not be able to Cope.

Is it possible to be retained if he cannot pass the year tests/exam? Or how hard is it to do well? Does most RI students go tuition or would whatever that is taught in school suffice for the kid to get above average GPA? How's the support from the School's teachers?

Sorry for the many questions, hope some one can help? 🙏

My neighbour’s son enrolled into RI after PSLE. She said her son looks relax studying in RI. The reason is her son is not aiming to be top students.

Goh Chok Tong was elected as the chairman of RI’s historical society during his student days there. In his own words he was the fall guy for a mischievous act by his fellow junior students to out vote the senior students. 😂

To begin with, the child must be of certain academic strength to handle the curriculum. If can qualify for RI with PSLE result then should not be a problem fundamentally.

Just tell you son try his best and don’t compare with others. And when opportunities are given, take it and again, just try his best, for the results will take care of themselves and don’t compare with others.

In anfield128’ words: run his own race

            In RI, everyone is good.
            Because

Each pupil (student) is talented, in their own unique ways. Otherwise, you won't even be able to enter RI.
Often, inside RI, students get to hear school announcements' broadcast, like a repeating parrot, until ...
students are sick & tired of hearing, over & over repeated again

            eg.
\"RI have just won in this competition or that competition, against other Secondary schools \".

Apart from entry via DSA domain talent,
            who else
get to be admitted into Sec 1 ( RI ), via PSLE AL score Cut off point, at AL 5 ?

            usually,
are the Top primary school students, coming from more than 100+ primary schools, all over the entire Singapore.
See, your son is only ONE of such students, because this is reality. There are several hundreds more students here, like your son.

If your son is Top in his primary school before,
            when come to RI,
situation can differ. Because others are just as good as your son, if not, better.

            Remember.
            The greatest enemy, is YOURSELF.
            So, look WITHIN yourself.
Continue to do what is best, for yourself.

            Remember.
The best, is yet to be.
            So,
            Don't compare yourself with others.
Don't go around, keep comparing regular Term test academic exam results, for each & every single subject from Year 1 to Year 6, with your fellow classmates.
            Eg.
Like for every regular Term test, trying to find out hard, in your class, hey, who got the highest GPA marks / score , for this or that Secondary school subject.
            Why ?

            Because

you may do well in some subjects, but sometimes, may not do so well in some other subjects.

            Just run your own race.
The best, is yet to be.

            Remember.
            At P6 or older -

            After gotten into RI -

You may think that you are like Mount Everest, the highest,
the most outstanding, the most envied upon or the tallest mountain, in the world.
Because of this thinking, some turned out to ... slowly, gradually, become arrogant, boastful, bragful (show off) and proud. Slowly, over the passage of time, they changed. Some sadly changed so much, until we can't recognise them anymore, from their \" once upon a time \" original self and friend. Tragic.
And often, if one is not watchful, pride can lead ... to men's great downfall. Beware of ... PRIDE.

            That's why,
don't compare yourself with others. The greatest ENEMY, is
YOURSELF. Is not your neighbour, but yourself.

the kid is in Y1 (28Y).

he is stressed (i am stressed). he is moving from 4+1 subjects, to 8+1 subjects AND 3 full-afternoons of CCA. desperately need to learn & practice time management skills

can he cope? he still adjusting, just like the one half of his class.

no one in his class goes for tuition. kid says it is \"cursed\" to go tuition. and looking at his time table, there is no time for tuition ...

kid got GPA of 3.0 (after 2 terms), the class mean is GPA 2.9 . no grade shock for him, and no grade shock for his classmates. grade shock for parents !

kid says RI teachers are \"scary/unapproachable\" unlike his primary school 'chers. then again RI 'chers are new to him, while kid has known his primary school teachers for 6 years.

              cheers

My daughter was in RGS/RI - so no direct experience! Just commenting a bit on your later questions:

If he's got a GPA of 3.0, he's far from failing, and if he does better as they year progresses (as many will), he'll be fine. Even if he stays at 3.0, that's still a pass. \"Sticker shock\" is something that you will have to get used to - my daughter was in an international school overseas until Sec 2, and used to get marks >95% - so you can imagine her sticker shock when she joined RGS. We were expecting it, so it didn't shock us, but her first mark was around 70+%, and she was very disappointed. But she got used to the marking system, and her marks also got better over the year.

Of course many RI students go for tuition! Maybe some are still resisting in Y1, but by Y4, many will be having tuition. What proportion, and how many subjects, I have no idea. But a good many will have tuition in at least 1 subject. Whether what is taught in school is \"sufficient without tuition\" really depends on the child, not the teacher. A strong student will cope, but weaker ones may need more help, though it doesn't have to be from tuition. Asking teachers, friends, parents, supportive family members, doing more self-study - all these can help.

You mention that your son finds sec school teachers unapproachable - I think he needs to understand that sec school teachers are not like pr school teachers. Sec school teachers will want students to take more initiative, and come and ask. They may need to make an appointment, and should come prepared. The student should ask specific questions - \"Can you explain how to work out this problem?\" as opposed to \"I can't understand the whole lesson!\" They should show that they have tried to work it out for themselves first, and be specific about where they are having difficulties. The teachers may seem more serious and less \"soft\" - but this is sec school, not pr school. The students will need to learn to cope with that.

                  Hope this helps.

During my kids time in Sec school, he had a classmate who aced academically. After O level this classmate did not choose to go HC or RI, he chosen another JC. I asked my son why he does not want to go HC or RI with his good result? My son said, maybe this classmate just want to focus on his studies. My son explained, in HC/RI,on top of studies, students are encouraged to take on activities to expose themselves to leadership/ social service roles etc.

RI is an institution created to groom leaders since its founding years. If a child choose to enroll into RI, to some degree, be prepared to be challenged, learn time management well; the typical trainings that potential leaders usually will be put through. Not saying it’s all bootcamp 8), but in general, RI would expect more from its students compared to other schools.

All of us should hope that our future leaders are all well trained , isn’t it?

fyi — went and bought 4 white uniform shorts from the bookshop a month ago. found out that sizing is inconsistent. difference of 2 inches (not CM) for the same labelled size. and the bookshop say this is a common problem, and buyer has to go to distributor/wharehouse (In-Trend?) to make exchange… distributor says: while label size is the same, actual size vary because country of make is different…
