But yes, you are right about the common tactic to get a high success %. They pre-select students.

Pre selected students? So the GEP prep class is more like warming up for the already talented. It is not about transforming ordinary students to GEP calibre. it make sense.

Yeah I think so. Not just because of class size but perhaps certain areas have more parents with wealth to buy/rent property close to good schools for P1 proximity preferential? My kid is in St Hildas so probably less of such demographic

19 in a class is nice. Honestly not too sure if this is the usual number historically. And I repeat… no GEP prep 😄

Yes of course. The kids who are prepped are probably in the top 5% in the first place.

If it’s top 5%, and with only top 1% going into GEP, that will mean 1 in 5 prepped accepted into GEP, translate to 20% success rate. And these top 5 % can comfortably qualify for IP too, without any special prep too I suppose. And if any of these talented students miss out GEP, 3 years later they can go IP.

Let the parents from that school to confirm better.

Indeed, GEP students in our (primary) school are distributed across all form classes in the cohort (so ~8 GEP children per form class)

Each GE center has either one or two classes of max 25 GEP students. Schools like NYPS and ACSP will have 2 such classes. Smaller schools may only have 1. Within the schools, a class of 25 GEP kids is split into two classes which are combined with HA students for non core subjects. Otherwise they’re reassemble in their class of 25 students max for English, maths, science and social studies. Chinese is as per normal. Higher Chinese vs non higher Chinese and not related to GEP.

I personally knew these students from the same primary school:

Student A took GEP selection test, went through 1st round but not 2nd round
Student B did not take GEP selection test.
Both students got 265 for PSLE.
Student C took GEP selection test and didn’t pass 1st round. Got 266 for PSLE.

Any P3 students can volunteer for the GEP selection test? Or any parents know what is the shortlisting criteria for GEP selection test? By academics performance till P3? Or there will be some pre aptitude test that shortlists students based on creativity or something?

Exactly, that is the case in our (primary) school

HCL is compulsory for us (until upper primary). So, there is the HCL for classes with only MS students; & there is 'Enriched' HCL for classes with both MS & GEP students (~4 such P6 classes currently in Y2023). All classes use the same textbooks, & sit for the same school exams; but 'Enriched' HCL curriculum materials (=physical handouts, SLS/ online assignments, enrichment activities) are separate & distinct

Just to clarify,
- Round 1 is called the screening test (because it is a coarser screen to filter out the bottom 90%)
- Round 2 is called the selection test (because it will select the top 10% of the top 10% = overall or nationwide 1%)

All P3s are invited to take part in Round 1. Those who did not attend either means: parent did not give consent; or absent/MC on that day. There is no pre-round 1 shortlisting taking place.
