Replacing a broken keycap on laptop keyboard

Hmm... I've had an Asus Zenbook like 10 years ago and while the keycap did not drop off, one of the arrow keys stopped working :frustrated: . Dunno if keyboards are a common problem with Asus.
The \"U\" key on my laptop (ASUS Zenbook) has come off! One of the \"legs\" that holds the key in place has broken off. Does anyone know where I can buy a replacement keycap? I've seen some sellers on Lazada who are in China - anyone tried these before?
I thought \"U\" wouldn't be much used, but now I've realised how common it is!
Is your notebook still under warranty? No matter what, I think it's better to send it in to the official repair centre:

It's nearly 4 yrs old and ot of warranty. Official repair will probably cost more than I'm willing to pay. Buying the keycap and assembly online costs $10-$12, but I'm wondering if there's anywhere to get it locally.

I don't think Asus keyboards are particularly prone to problems - my family has had about 8 Asus laptops over the years, and this is my 3rd! This is first time we've had any keyboard issue. -
Superglue?

That was my first thought, but I read up about how it works - there are moving parts underneath the keycap. It could make the whole key freeze up and unusable?

That's pretty dangerous . Don't try it... or it'd cost you more to repair it. Just think, if superglue is the solution, how come keycaps don't come superglued?

Can you just use the auto-complete (tab when the correct word shows up before you get to “u”) or misspell words and then click on the squiggly line to correct it (type “you” as “yov” and then change it)?

I could, but seems like too troublesome a work-round. I'll try to get a replacement if I can!

Makes sense! One time my \"4\" key was broken so I needed to enter numbers in an xls as \"=3+1\" and then copy/paste as values. Got interesting when the emails said (3 + 1) x ABC!

If you go to your laptop settings, there is an option for \"On-Screen Keyboard\". You can adjust the size and drag its position. Very helpful especially if your laptop is touch screen!

That's a great idea. But I think most laptops are not touch screen enabled these days.

I’ve ordered a replacement keycap from a seller on Lazada. Should arrive within the next week. Hope the replacement works!

Yes, let's pray that it works. Did the seller just sell you 1 key or the whole set? Hard to imagine just selling 1 key

Just 1 key! He required to know the make and model of the laptop, and also asked for photos of the broken key and the hinge. So hopefully I will get the right thing! Cost was S$7 plus S$1 for delivery. Worth it as my computer is otherwise still working well (nearly 4 yrs old) and I'm hoping not to replace it for another year or so.

I thought so. The English and spelling was too perfect. Maybe one day when the bots have mastered Singlish & typos then i wont be able to spot them!

To close the loop - the keycap was delivered today, and I can type 'U’s properly again! The only tiny flaw (which doesn’t bother me) is that the colour of the keycap is slightly different - the new one has a slight blue-ish colour, while the existing ones are more black. But it could the the existing ones have darkened over the years?

Congratulations! You are right to just ignore the different in shades... small thing.
