Hi

I’ve read that some, and had personal friends with, kids who had a drastic drop in their scores from consistent Al1 to Al 3 to Al4 and worse even Al5 especially for maths and science. I wonder what could have led to such situations?

Say a drop from 90 (AL1) to 74 (AL5) ...
For Science, I think one possibility is lots of careless mistakes in MCQ. It's so easy to get 5-7 MCQs wrong if one is not careful. For OE, if kid is consistent AL1 standard, then kid is already used to writing the complete answers, so how to lose a lot more marks in OE?

Thank you do much for your sharing. Yes, you are right about the limited time left and it feels like there is still so much to study can't wait for the exam to be over. It has been quite tiring since the Oral and Prelims.

You are welcome! I would plan with the kid.. Look at how much time we have left and prioritise. To me, some parts of the revision is not worth it to do anymore at this stage.

I always look at how much effort/time I need to put in to get the expected outcome. If too much effort is needed to get the extra 5 marks for one subject and that time/effort can be spent on another subject to get 10 marks, then we do that instead. No point improving 1 AL in subject A and drop 1 AL in subject B. End result is still the same.

One of my kids breezed through Math in P5 and P6 and scored 95-99 all the time but did not get A* at PSLE.
Another kid who always scored low 80s got A* at PSLE. My conclusion was one got complacent and/or had exam nerves at PSLE though he said he was calm, hence made lots of careless mistakes. The other learnt he had to be very careful and was more careful than usual in PSLE.

So now that I have gone through a few PSLE exams, I have learnt it can still go either way on the actual days. We control what we can manage and for the rest, we try not to worry so much.

You are right. I was trying to see what are the factors we can control to avoid such disappointing outcomes. However, it seems that it is beyond our control; there are too many factors at play here- they go beyond the child’s academic ability. At times abit of luck and the lack of it. Just have to do what we can and accept whatever comes.

Could not agree more. I think there is the emotional aspect also. This year kids had less exam practice, When faced with the real environment of exam, it can bring unexpected issue. Not all are mature enough.

Once your kid finish PSLE by the first week of October, let them enjoy, have a good break & rest. Can bring them overseas, for a family together holiday.

Hi for Math, I would like to share personal experience of my child who has no Math tuition. It would be helpful to download the past year psle questions from 2012 onwards and keep practising. For the tougher years like 2021 paper, many kids may score badly in the first attempt and it would be good to let them do a second time to boost their confidence. Mark down their errors for challenging questions and make them redo.

Actually, my kid’s school tested them full mock papers (every component except oral) during the ca1 and sa1 periods. Results are not officially recorded but we took it very seriously. That has saved us a lot of last minute ground work to do now. Very appreciative to the school for being farsighted.

When school does it, children take tit seriously. Unfortunately, my DD school did bite size only.... Prelims just the next day after PSLE orals was very overwhelming..

For composition, do we have to leave a line in between? I read from the SEAB rules booklet, that states "Don’t leave line", but the school teacher said to leave a single line in between?

Hi,

Does anyone know how the COP works if the AL score doesn’t fall in the express nor normal range?

For example school A:
Express 4-15
Normal 21 to 24
Child’s AL score 18

Does that mean that the child cannot get into school A even for Normal?
