My DD2 told me she saw many students crying after taking the J1 maths paper today. Aiyo, will the experience impact their mental health or not? It can be depressing and stressful for not doing well in school exams but I believe the majority of them will likely get an A for their actual A levels.

2 postings on parent WhatsApp group regarding yesterday tough Math paper.

“ Today’s math paper was heavily weighted towards Calculus 48% and Vectors 17%. Typically, the weaker topics of the math students for A level.

The integration question was also particularly tough because it was not an applicative question that allowed them to use a calculator. They had to show the step-by-step working and hence the students got stumped by it.

It is good that the paper exposed their weak areas rather than to lull everyone into complacency. It is tough to learn it the hard way, but what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger.”

“ Being an ex HCI teacher , I understand that the Maths dept sets very high standards. Be fair to the HCI college Maths Dept , 8 in 10 score A in H2 Math for the past five years A levels!

I also told my son to be mentally prepared for “difficult “ Math papers and don’t expect the Sec 4 high school Type where most students will get A1-2!
My boy said last year’s paper was easy but I said it was not set by the same team.

Thanks Dewayne Wan for your analysis of the maths paper in terms of topical coverage .

Admittedly, our students these days may study very hard but may not be comprehensive and consistent in studying for examinations.
A Good wake up call for such students including my boy . I asked him what could u have done better in retrospect.

Next year , statistics topics like permutation and combination can be even more challenging . Consistency is key !

All the best to their Physics and Biology paper for those who offer these subjects today !”

Ya my girls said maths was tough but not to the extent of crying over it or will fail the papers. None of their classmates cried in class so not sure if the TKK mrt incident is exaggerated or not. Anyway grade deflation in hcjc is always there.

Last year J1 Math paper’s was relatively easy. Does that mean that this batch of students (in J2 now) will do badly for their coming A levels? Probably not and I suppose it will still be around 8 out of 10 scoring an A for Maths for this cohort.

So this year’s J1 did a killer Maths paper that made a handful of students cried. Yet I suppose that around 8 out of 10 would score an A for their A levels Maths. It’s not as if the distinction rate for Maths will rise to 9 out of 10.

They say last two years easy maybe give chance cos covid year. This year exceptionally challenging I heard due to 5 integration questions that are not straight forward.

                      Thanks Lenny08!

Understand that EASE Application period is 15/11 to 31/12. Any parents have past experiences whereby they received fm NUS latest end Nov or early Dec? Or anybody know if the window period to receive the email shld not be latest by what date of Nov?

The NUS EASE email states quite clearly that students whose first choice is Dentistry, Law or Medicine should not apply.

Given that universities are now increasingly moving towards discretionary/aptitude-based admissions, and awarding bonus points for selected first choice courses, unless there is clear interest and clarity in what to pursue, some may find that it is better to wait for actual results before applying and listing out course choices.
