Nanyang Girls' High School [*IP]

Take your girl to both the open house of rgs and Nygh. Let her feel for herself which school will be suitable for her. Understand the school culture, environment, curriculum and CCA. She needs to be sure about enjoying 6 years in this school.

I credit NYGH and the Chinese language teachers I had for at least preserving a very basic fluency in Chinese, some 5 years since I last took formal lessons in Sec 4. I was (still am) pretty bad at Chinese but the fact that I had Chinese lessons every day and was in a BSP class effectively forced me to improve.
Is NYGH very strong in Chinese subject?
I think NYGH and RGS are both good schools - it probably comes down to factors like school culture and environment. That said, I will happily vouch for the warm, caring, friendly and nurturing environment I experienced in NYGH. -

My girl would like to dsa via thru badminton, may I know what are her chances? She is in school team and has manage to be in one of the top four badminton team in national level. -

Hi, just wanna ask about parents' opinion.
What factors prompt you to select NYGH say over RGS ?
Is NYGH very strong in Chinese subject?
Thanks for sharing
Hi, I was a tour guide on the open house day and I answered one parent this question as well. Basically for me, I prefer an emphasis on Chinese culture. This is definitely not the only factor. I prefer NYGH over RGS because of the 4 values it highlights on:勤慎端朴,Diligence, Prudence, Respectability, Simplicity. In this society nowadays, you often see in the newspapers many successful men or women whose future are at risks due to maybe say corruption. This is due to the lack of the any four values as mentioned above.
I fervently believed that NYGH will nurture me to a lady who embodies these four values and would further aid me in future if I were to work in the society in future.
Addiitonally, Everyone wants to get along well with their colleagues in the working society in future. NYGH also emphasizes strongly on teamwork which explains our annual camps, Lifeskills camp (LSC),Outward Bound (OBS) in secondary 1-3.
NYGH is not only a school who tells their students to 死读书 everyday, but to practice many essential Lifeskills and improvement of EQ to further co-operate with different people in the society in future. It focuses on your girls' lifelong happiness and excellence, not just the current academic results.
Indeed I did not think of so much when I came into nanyang, I just thought that I really love the values it emphasizes on and I just came in. And I never regret coming in at all. Indeed, it is a pretty stressful life in NYGH. But which success comes without the efforts? NYGH is a good school in Singapore, so definitely it is slightly more competitive and demanding than many schools. But I believe the working society now is even more competitive and demanding, so the basically just prepares us better for the future!
Reallyyyy longgggg post but I hope everyone gets to understand NYGH better. Anyway I am a Secondary Two student.
Hi Sunnyyyy,
We have the same thinking as you are. My daughter likes NYGH very much. But we heard that for mainstream DSA through academic is very hard.
May I know how you get into NYGH, through DSA (academic or CCA) or PSLE result? If DSA through academic, perhaps can share with us the process like GAT, interview etc.
Thank you very much. -
all IP schools, DSA academic will require consistent 90% overall result from P1 to P6. main focus will be P4 -P6. and that is just beginning, still got GAT & interview etc…

Is the cca grade important? How does it effect the girls year 4 result? For mainstream students cca grade can be use to deduct some points off their O level result, but how does it affect IP students?
-
The principal said that cca points have no effect on ip students’ year 4 result, but it’s important for scholarship application.

Hi, I'm a sec 1 Nanyang Girl and I would say that the main reason I chose NYGH instead of RGS is how NYGH nurtures us, be it academically or in general, as a person.Hi, just wanna ask about parents' opinion.
What factors prompt you to select NYGH say over RGS ?
Is NYGH very strong in Chinese subject?

I've only spent half a year here in Nanyang and i can already safely comment that the teachers, principal, whatsoever have really gone an extra mile to cultivate good habits and important values in us. They emphasise so much on this that we have special curriculum time put aside, eg. PCCG, CCT and Sec 1 assembly. The teachers will talk to us about different topics, such as responsibility, entitlement etc for the year heads. For our form teachers, they go through with us stuff such as career guidance (appreciating the effort our parents put in their work to bring us up). We also have a period CCE, basically your civics education lesson where a teacher comes in and talks to us about morals, like 弟子规, filial piety etc. for the holidays i was asked to help out with the house chores(haha) so I think that they are trying to instil responsibility and filial piety in us.
As for academics, another main concern for many parents, Nanyang won't leave you in the lurch, regardless of what type of student you are and how you have been doing in class. You may come to this school via affiliation, DSA, appeal or PSLE score, but whatever it is, our teachers are always willing to fork out their own free time to help you. Just approach them for help, and they'll revise the key concepts with you until you understand. They won't treat you differently just because your PSLE aggregate is lower than that if your peers or anything, unlike in some other prestigious schools. In a nutshell, teachers here are approachable, dedicated, nurturing and :grphug:
(As for stressfulness, you have to manage your time wisely. The teachers give us very reasonable deadlines I never fail to meet. And you can't expect 0 stress from a good school right? Our teachers stretch us, but not till we break)
About the Chinese here. I speak English at home, never read a single book till I came here, but still I'm doing good with my Chinese... So far. My Chinese teacher finds ways to engage us in her funnnnn lessons and meanwhile get us 100% prepared for tests, exams and graded assignments. I won't say Chinese here is impossible, but neither is it easy as cake. Enough to make you work a little harder, not enough to make you cry.
So yeah, the main reason I chose NYGH over any other school is the way the teachers are generally more nurturing
P.S. Some may think that being a top school, the students here are snobbish but no, I have come across many seniors and fellow sec 1s and none of them actually come off as stuck up. -
Can anyone offer me advise…my girl needs help with her sciences: chemistry and physics. Any suggestions? tutors?
