Hi, everyone. Sort of a general question, I guess.
My boy's really weak in Math. From my experience, I'd have to give him assessment papers to him on a regular basis. That helped him some time back. I don't know why I stopped.
Anyway, based on his P5 end year exams, he scored about 26, eligible for NT. But MOM does state that they need an AL7 for English and Math. I'm not so worried for his English. I'm concerned for his Math. He scored AL8.
My question is what happens then? I understand that below 30 is either repeat or Northlight. What about those that fail either English or Math? Will they still be able to get into NT or will they only be eligible for schools like Northlight or APS?
In the meantime, I will be pushing my boy on his Math revisions.
I believe if the child does not meet the conditions that MOE indicated (min AL7 for English and Math) he can also repeat PSLE (or go to Northlight - I doubt u will choose Northlight just because of Math 1 subject). But do check with the primary school whether they will even let him stay on to repeat.
Will the school allow him to drop to Foundation Math in P6? Does he have a good chance of scoring AL6-7 if he takes Foundation Math instead (slightly fewer topics?)? These questions can only be answered by his Math teacher.
Will the school be arranging for remedial Math lessons during these year-end hols? Or are u on your own totally and maybe consider external tuition (probably need a patient 1-1 tutor). -

My kid had a school mate from same studentcare in pri school time. She was a bright kid, nothing unusual, talkative, even intro rubic cube to mine. Can solve it in short time, eventually when my kid picked it up, can compete. But when my kid told me this girl got 30 for maths, and my kid tried to teach her, she still cannot do the qns, I had some suspicion. True enough, I was told later, that girl was diagnosed as dyslexic. Her mum then finally understood why she struggled so much.

I am not saying the same applies but do try find the root of problem. Talk to school for help. They have counsellor, I suppose they can provide this area of assistance. sadly, the above case was not picked up by school.
Very sad, sometimes, some kids are so smart and disguise their need for more help for so long, not picked up. Dont want another of such case. -
I have a fren’s kid who was also diagnosed with mild dyslexia. School tr arranged for someone from MOE to check because they noticed he had issues understanding. This was done in P1/2. So he has additional support after school ever since to help him cope. He is in P5 and still has major issues with Maths. But the school said they will help him to apply for Access Arrangements (AA) for PSLE, to give him extra time during PSLE.
Maybe can talk to the teachers to find out more. -

I'm completely on my own. Though i'm definitely going to put him weekly Math revisions during the holidays.
It was a rushed call so i didn't get to ask what happens if he still fails. I'll ask during next years term 1 meet up. -

My child cleared PSLE in 2023 with a surprise total score of AL 4. I’m here to share that PSLE is an uphill but not so scary endeavour after all.
DC attended group tuition only at the beginning of P6. Otherwise, we just tried our best at home. Here are some tips of what we did:
Chinese = watch the Oral component as the weightage is heavy at 25%. Read good composition samples
Math = Master every topic with Conquer and SL Education workbooks. Progress to Conquer Problem Sums (Standard, Model Drawing and Advanced editions). Attempt Olympiad type questions if there is time
English = Read extensively from the library, practice from Scholastics workbooks
Science = Master the school Marshall Cavendish textbook basics, review keywords in the syllabus, strengthen his understanding with Conquer Science practice books
- Revise with PhD Exam Package, Marshall Cavendish‘s PSLE Examiners Secrets Revealed closer to the exams
- Limit screen time usage. A child needs outdoor activities and sufficient rest to process learned content. Overstimulation and excessive blue light may jeopardize learning
- Do not attempt past year papers if the child’s foundation is not stable. It is a waste of time and induces anxiety
- Use an alarm clock to teach time management. The abolishment of exams in schools gave DC a shock in actual timed-papers
- Enrol for DSA only if that is what the child wants. The portfolio / interview time preparation is better used to revise for PSLE
That’s all I have to share. Happy 2024 and may every child obtain something positive out of their PSLE journey. Hwaiting! -

Yes, but as parents, we should all know that PSLE is just the starting point to an continuous load of exams and tests. PSLE is important, but pales in comparison to, say, a university degree. If you do well in PSLE, that is a good start to a life of academic excellence that culminates in a Masters or even Phd! -

Most kids can clear Maths| AL6. Let the school/cher decides and make an informed decision if the child should to at Foundation/ Std Level. Trust them…..

With a lot of Hardwork, it can be done! meanwhile, rewind the clock to do Key P4 Topics like Fractions/ Decimals/ Area and Perimeter/ Decimals…. -
Hi I was a PSLE 2023 Mum too and here to share advice. Do not be too fixated over the schools your child can attend. I have seen my boy’s classmates getting all stressed up because they only wanted the top tier schools. My boy was fearless and relaxed because we have been telling him to get the results first then we think about the schools. We also paced him slowly and worked on the weaker topics first instead of rushing into exam papers (too much drilling kills the joy of learning and remember psle is only the beginning not the end). He continues to pursue two of his favourite sports up till August and even though we let him try DSA for the experience and he didn’t manage to get any, he was fine with it and continued to work hard and his eventual psle score was half of what he did in P5 SA2. He entered the school he originally tried DSA for and now he is free to choose any cca (he’s generally athletic and loves a variety of sports). I am enjoying watching him develop his independence. He just got his own phone too (with rules and restrictions) after year of co using my phone as there are too many teachable moments. He has no complaints at all although he’s the last in his p6 class to get a phone. Jiayou!! Continue to encourage your kids and motivate them on the small improvements..help them to focus by minimising distractions and give them lots of moral support.
