Singapore Chinese Girls School (Secondary)

Hi Manorway,
DD is currently in Sec 1 IP. All in all, she enjoys her sch life in SCGS.
Pros: ( from a parent’s perspective )
1) classmates, teachers are generally nice
2) holistic development ( academic rigor is there yet there is a wide range of activities to engage the girls in non-academic areas)
3) strict hp policy
Con:
1) not very into Chinese culture haha -

Hi, hope some current SCGS parents can help. My girl will be getting her PSLE results next week and she’s not from SCGS primary.
For the 2023 Sec 1 intake, the COPs for non-affiliated girls are both IP and O level stream both AL8. If student A and B both get AL8 and put SCGS IP as first choice followed by SCGS O level as second choice, is it really only by luck (ballot) that student A may get into the IP stream and student B gets into the O level stream? Does the school allow internal transfer between the IP and O level stream? ( provided the student meet the IP COP of AL8)
Thanks in advance! -

Every year, the Cut off point for SCGS (IP + OP), is never fixated. It depends on each year students' demand. So, please don't ever get the wrong idea that every year, the Cut off point for SCGS is forever AL 8. Who knows, this year may not even be 8 points!

To answer your question,
if the last seat for IP has already been taken / snapped up, then Sorry, she can't get into IP. So, the computer will go down to check what's next, on her list. If her 2nd choice is SCGS O level track (OP) & if OP still have vacancies, they can still slot her in. Otherwise, if no vacancy, then she gets posted to another Secondary school.
Of course, your daughter can always appeal for SCGS ( IP ), assuming that she is able to meet the official Cut off point (COP) for IP. But that comes under appeal, another different route. And whether successful or not for appeal, will depend on
1) whether any vacancies arise for IP, in the first case
and
2) if IP vacancies do arise,
who else,
are also appealing concurrently for IP, apart from your daughter ?
In other words,
in Total,
how many more other P6 competitors are there, also appealing for the same identical track as your daughter, assuming that all of them have also been able to meet SCGS (IP) Cut off point, whatever the COP is, for that particular year or batch of demand.
By the way,
If no vacancy arises in IP , and if your daughter gets posted into OP (SCGS) and if let's say your daughter proceed to appeal for IP but not successful inspite of making that appeal,
then,
when will be the next possible Transfer from SCGS (OP to IP), take place ?
Answer is -
the chance will come, at the end of Secondary 2, starting IP in Sec 3, provided she does well overall, at end of Sec 2. -

I would put SCGS IP as 1st choice and O level as 2nd choice. If both IP and O level only have last few vacancies for AL8 students to ballot for, probably those who listed them as 1st choice will get a chance to ballot.

That is, your DD will get a chance to ballot for IP and in the event she did not get balloted in, then she will move on to her 2nd choice. But if SCGS O level has to conduct ballot for those who listed it as 1st choice for their last few places, then she will not get to ballot but move on to her 3rd choice school. However, if SCGS O level has enough vacancies for all the 8 pointers who listed them as 2nd choice, then all will get in.
Please correct me if my understanding is wrong. -

Too add on what others have shared, balloting could be by citizenship after merit, depending on vacancies and demand. Sg citizens have higher chance than others. Is merit, order than citizenship.

but in the event
if there are not enough vacancies left for students who have chosen OP, then
MOE computer system will ballot those SG fellow citizens first. Citizenship come first -
Thanks for all the replies. And my girl got AL8 for her PSLE, exactly like my prediction. But to my surprise, she got distinction for her higher chinese. ( She only got a pass during prelim.)
Although I really like SCGS ( it’s very near our home), I would much prefer her to be in the IP than O level stream. My plan now is for SCGS IP as first choice and Dunman High as second choice, instead of SCGS O level. We are all SG citizens and hopefully she will be lucky and be balloted into SCGS! -

Out first choice is SCGS as well with AL8. All the best to us

Anyone has info on roughly how many students with AL8 got into SCGS IP? Just curious. -

I remember reading somewhere else in this forum that AL8 is a very large group. Someone mentioned that SJI ( boy school but also COP8) has more than 10 boys with AL8 balloted out last year.

So are you going to put SCGS O level as second choice? Or will you put another IP school?
