Recently, I was told, a girl had 1-1 private tuition from P1 to P6 as parents cannot teach and wanted to provide best things for only child. Kid got AL10 and was disappointed to missed RV COP. Was told they will continue this tuition approach in sec school. Many kids have 2 to 2 subjects tuition, more in upp sec.

I shall take my leave from this topic from here. Thanks for the discussion.
I have a few friends/relatives with ONLY one child. Most can’t have more kids due to medical reasons. The love for their only child is beyond what I can describe.

Many parents believe that the biggest gift they can give to their children is the best education they can provide. What your friend does to her child is out of love, definitely not out to torture her. You think your friend will provide tuition for a stranger’s kid? Who minds having more money on hand?

For me I won’t send my kids for tuition for all the subjects at TLL or 1-1 because I have more than one kid and admittedly, I am a Scrooge.

At the end of day, parents should know what works for the kids and what they want kids to achieve out of the education process. Having said that, of cos many succumbed to peer pressure and started loading kids with tuition . Wise or not, difficult for outsiders to judge but watch out for mental health issues. For me, haha, not gonna spend so much on my kids cos don’t see need (I hv better needs to save for my retirement). I think my kids can figure out la or if not, the local education system should be able to absorb them for further education.
If I recall correctly, you once shared how you quit a high flying job for a few years to groom your kids. Isn’t it another form of investment in them? I would suppose the lost income for that few years should count towards your investment in them

Yes indeed that was true. But the “happiness” and “time spent” with them can’t really be quantified……so in this case, quantitatively it was a “bad” investment decision haha cos my opportunity cost was so much more. But holistically I think money loss can’t measure up to the “joys” accompanying them in their various milestones.

Indeed it was a very difficult decision to stop work cos it was a “bad” investment decision. Nevertheless it was impt bc I was ranting at them every night after work (stressed and tired) . I did beat myself up after being SAHM by setting ownself KPIs (self-tortured haha) whereby if I don’t hit, I’ll return to work. I know a bit Seow right (my hubs said so) but I guess that’s the Singaporean spirit? We were brought up this way to survive isn’t it?

Many love their HDB abodes but would move to stay in a GCB if given the choice. That to me, is not considered “freedom of choice” because many cannot afford to live in GCB in the first place and learn to love their HDB.
Ha...Ha... As staying in HDB, I can tell you many HDB residents are super rich and some of them even own a few condominiums like my SIL and my colleagues but they still occupying and stay in a HDB house because they can receive the maintenance fee rebate and U-Save from the Government. The colleagues sitting besides me - is staying in a 4 room HDB flat in Haig Road but bought a new condo by paying one million cash. :yikes:

Now I understand why I had got endless scolding when I was small because my mother stopped working and became a SAHM to accompany me and my silbings but I did not manage to get a good academic results and failed most exams. Maybe she thought it was a bad investment on me and she suffered a great loss. :stupid:

I dunno what’s up with your mom but every mom differs. I did say I beat myself up if I made the wrong decision. I did not say I take it out on my kids.

I am sorry for causing some misunderstanding. You are a great mother. My mother is a funny person.

Actually I fell seriously ill after arguing with my mother during my trip and maybe a bit aggressive in my writing and I apologise for it.

I am not sure should that even considered as “freedom of choice”? Precisely to avoid such lack of options, parents invest heavily on their children’s education.

Many love their HDB abodes but would move to stay in a GCB if given the choice. That to me, is not considered “freedom of choice” because many cannot afford to live in GCB in the first place and learn to love their HDB.
I’m not sure if I want GCB afterall. We’re only a small dot, unlike big countries with plenty of space.

It won’t be easy maintaining a big home to make life comfortable hor myself & to maintain a well manicured garden, tho lots of space for my gardening based on ratio of GCB plot. Wld love to hv a GR for it to run the grounds too! I loath the day I’ve to train my helpers to clean, upkeep, and keep in hospitable condition for guests. Hv to engage contract gardeners to trim & cut grass, main swimming pool, etc.

Maybe good for a short enjoyment but it can work against me as I grow old. Good for when u’re young & hv bz associates to entertain but will be too quiet for elderlies when u prefer peace & not the ra-rah-rah. GCB is not only the land affordability but the long-term maintenance of it.

So, a smaller place or condo is still good enuf with 24-hour security. I don’t enjoy having to drive out or walk far to get my daily needs or errands done. Having neighbors or security guards to meet & greet often enuf gives me a good sense of being in touch with real ppl. That’s how I feel.

Minus 3/5 degree with strong blowing wind almost cannot feel ears and nose. Once inside building and squeeze the face muscles, feel so different…like defrosting according to dd. Cannot imagine those people living like below minus 40degree.

Feel touched to have read some of the posts and also could feel many pros of utilizing tuitions for advancement. All different parenting. I have people around me to straight away ask what are you enrolling for the kids during holiday…2 tuition a subject etc. Sometimes we do feel some stress…look at it positively, it may help us to not let our kids fall too far behind … but sometimes when too stressed will feel confused of own ways.
