Hi all! Can a returning Singaporean take up higher Chinese language in Sec 1? How can he/she let the school know? Also, what is Chinese language’B’ (indicated in the school booklist)? TIA
must take some entrance test in Chinese first, administerd by the Secondary school.
      Then,

they will mark the script and Chinese Head of Department will decide, what kind of Chinese your child can take. Everything boils down to your Chinese proficiency level, in mastering Chinese. When the student takes the Chinese test, all these will show up, in every section. Be it in Chinese Paper 1 zuowen (composition) or in Paper 2 Chinese Comprehension \" li jie wen da\" section or in the Chinese vocabulary section.

Just call up the Secondary school concerned, request to speak to the Chinese department HOD, ask them when your child can come down to school, to take the Chinese test.

There wont be any more CL “B” from 2024 onwards. I believe the options are HCL/G3 CL/G2 CL/G1 CL.

Best to wait for after the posting results and the school will update parents with the latest booklist.

If u already know the school via SPERS results, just ask the school directly. I believe u need to inform the MTL dept head directly if u wish to take up HCL since it’s not the default choice for returning singaporeans.

Thank for yr reply! Should we buy the respective Chinese textbooks? Or only after the test?

            Buy Chinese school textbook
            only after

your child has sat for the Chinese proficiency test,
            and after

what the Chinese department HOD inform your child (son / daughter), which type of Chinese he / she can take.

As for all other remaining Sec 1 subjects,

if after this Wednesday u know which Secondary school your child has been posted to, can refer to the Sec 1 book list and buy textbook(s) for all other subjects, apart from Chinese. You can buy them

            either

from that Secondary school bookstore your child has been posted to,

            or

buy them from any Popular bookstore branch in SG, that sell school textbook(s).

Thanks Zac’s mum! Was curious what’s CL B since the school only caters for express and above. So do I need to purchase the book first? Or maybe only the standard CL textbooks?

A side question: May I know what’s the shoes requirement? White and/or black?

Noted with many thanks! We’ll purchase the CL books after school starts. As very difficult to get to the relevant teacher in-charge at this time of the year.

Totally a newbie in terms on how the current schools work, the uniform code and etc. (way different from my school’s days)😁

CLB was an easier syllabus (roughly NA level) for those Express students who couldn’t cope with Express Chinese. Someone told me that the CLB textbooks have had their covers reprinted to indicate G2 CL for next year’s kids.

It seems u already know your school; go investigate their website and their specific ksp thread for all the info & connect with parents (chatgroups are usually formed upon posting results). Usually secondary school no black shoes; majority will allow majority white-based shoes. Very few need all-white (except maybe SAP schools?)

Hi Parents, can I check what’s the benefit of taking HCL in secondary school (O levels route)?

"With just a C6 in O-Level Higher, taking up Higher Chinese can translate into a reduction in 2 points, which is the equivalent of 2 grades in the O-Level examinations." – is this still true for the SEC exam?

                      Thanks!!
