I think every child has their own path to walk, even if they can benefit from older siblings and cousins’ experiences/materials. I’m the eldest in my family; DS is also the eldest among his cousins (not counting the one who is already 22 and far different syllabus at all points). I found that whatever materials/advice we passed to the younger ones out of willingness to share, it was never appreciated or even used. My younger brother chose to study his own way. I concluded every person wants to forge their own journey instead of being compared to others.

I discarded many books coz don’t want to overwhelm my nephew. Bought too many for dd1. From now I think will buy selectively only when they want to buy.

Agree with this. Tuition materials and inherited notes may be useful for reference, but not everyone wants them or find them useful. I was the 2nd oldest cousin - but I never found my older cousin's notes very useful. And they were far too bitty and messy! And really, the practice of making your own notes is much more valuable as it helps you organise the knowledge and internalise it for yourself.

Even making use of your own tuition materials is not always helpful. For myself, I had tuition for Chinese and, for my final A level year, Maths. I don't recall ever finding the materials useful for revision! I always pretty much just started revision from the textbooks/lecture notes (for A level) rather than go through all the practice materials - there was too much, too incremental. I don't recall my kids ever using their workbooks or practice materials much when doing revision either. When revising, you should already more or less know the material so there's no need to go through everything step by excruciating step; making summaries and lists and doing some practice is a much better use of time.

Even for my kids who are 2y apart and from same Sch same syllabus, these notes were not referred to at all.

Good to hear. Whenever I clear their notes b4 school starts, I have the guilty feeling.

He will be sec 2 in 2024. Already 5cm taller than me! I think he is looking forward to being a big bro to the incoming batch of recruits 🕺

New phase in 2024 ya? Nice to look forward to.
