Study Higher Chinese, is still very useful after all.

Example
=======

Suppose there are two Secondary 4 CCHM students (A and B). Suppose each of their original O-level Raw score L1R5, is 6.

But there is a difference, between them.

1)

Pupil A has cleared her O-level (Higher Chinese) successfully, by acquiring a minimum of "D7".

So, her nett L1R5 score, has now become

Original Raw 6

minus away 2 points (for her Cca Leadership position)

minus away another further 2 points (for having cleared her O-level Higher Chinese).

Thus, her nett L1R5 is now … 6 - 4 = 2 points (nett).

What is the Cut off point,
to enter RI or Hwa Chong ?
4 points.

Hence, with nett 2,
pupil A can now enter into either RI or Hwa Chong Junior College, readily.


Why ?

Because
the entry into A-level Junior Colleges, is based upon your Nett L1R5 score. Not based on your original, Raw score.

How about Pupil B ?

Now, at the end of Secondary 3, suppose Pupil B has failed to acquire a minimum of what is that pu-hua grade, expected by CCHM Chinese department :-

is it a minimum expectation of an A2 or a B3, in his O-level (Standard Chinese, called pu-hua) ?

So, suppose Pupil B scored "B4" in his pu-hua (O-level).

Then,
the Chinese department in CCHM will ask Pupil B to please re-take his O-level (pu-hua), and bar him from taking O-level (Higher Chinese), at end of his Secondary 4.

In other words, Pupil B did not clear his Higher Chinese.

Thus,
even though his original Raw score is 6, same as Pupil A (also Raw 6), however his nett L1R5 :-

a)

if he were to choose either RI or Hwa Chong JC, his nett L1R5 is only

6 minus away 2 points for Cca, become nett 4 only.

Since the Cut off point for RI / Hwa Chong is 4, then,
depending on his luck : he may be balloted into either JC

OR

balloted out of above two JCs.

No guarantee that, he can go into one of them. Outcome is yet to be decided by his luck, during balloting.


b)

However,
because he is from CCHM and CCHM offer affliation to Nanyang Junior College (NYJC), with his original Raw score at 6, he can definitely enter back into his affliated NYJC. No issue.

Why ?

Because

Raw 6

minus away 2 points, for Cca leadership position

minus away another 2 points, for the affliation to Nanyang Junior College, his nett L1R5 now become …

Nett 2

And what is the Cut off point, to enter Nanyang JC ?

Answer : nett 5

So, with nett 2, can he now enter Nanyang Junior College ?

Of course, he can !

the Cut off point, to enter into Nanyang Junior College, is currently

5 points (nett), for Science stream, based on last year 2022 O-level batch, born in 2006.

But,
because the students born in year 2007 are highly competitive,
it is possible that

the Cut off point can be lowered to…

4 points, instead.

So, after receiving your O-level results released by MOE,

on Friday (12 January 2024),
JAE students who are applying for Nanyang Junior College, may take note.

As far as i know, Chemistry is the compulsory science subject for all schools. So there won’t be any bio + physics combi in any school.
