However, this is too sudden, for those JAE students who have entered by Arts stream with 6 points, nett.
NYJC loophole patched.
https://www.reddit.com/r/SGExams/s/TgicC0zzoY
Perhaps, next year (2025) then implement this loop hole. To be fair. Because the P just announced today, first day of orientation. These Arts students do not have time, to react.
Otherwise, you will see an exodus of 2024 batch of Arts stream students appealing out of NYJC last minute, trying desperate to seek appeal into some other JCs (for Science stream). The Appeal window is still on, until early next week, by a certain date line.
Anyway, nett 6 points Is still a very good score. Hard to get 6 points, nett. -

Mr Pang Choon How, the new Nanyang JC Principal who came on board wef this year (2024),
hailed from ex (former) Hwa Chong . He was Hwa Chong Principal for past 6 years, from (2018 to 2023).
With the removal / elimination of the loop hole newly implemented, seems (looks) like ...
Nanyang Junior College has become a ...
2nd Hwa Chong #2.
Not exactly removal/elimination. Other schools require students to enter by Science COPs if they were to take Hybrid subject combination.
A step in the right direction, nevertheless. -

This loop hole will stop, wef this year (2024), since the new Principal (Mr Pang C H) from ex (former) Hwa Chong, has come on board.
I look up.
MOE website and there isn't any guidance about Arts or Science stream.
While most JCs websites clearly state the finite subject combi for both Arts and Sci stream (ie in EJC, Arts stream can only take Maths as a Science/contrasting) subject), some don't and thats why you have creativity at play here for what we observe at NYJC. It does seem like a loophole to get into NYJC, using the Arts COP to do Sci subjects.
Now that JAE students realise that the loop hole is gone, the Cut off point for next year intake for Arts stream, may change. That is, the current batch of 2024 Sec 4 students going to sit for O level this year (born in 2008). The Cut off point for Science stream at nett 5 won't change much, but that for Arts stream intake, can change. -
The impact of this change will result in a dip in the mean RP in 2026 when this batch of 24xx take their A-levels next year. This is due to students taking Arts subjects that are not their strength and the strength of NYJC is Science and not Arts. We have very good Science and Math teachers but sadly, not for Arts. With the increased in the numbers of students taking Arts this year, does our school even have enough teachers for the respective subjects is also a question mark. If my child is in this situation, I will appeal to transfer out.
Anyway, it seems that this new P is not so well liked by the students. His style is totally different from the previous 2 Ps. Happy students produced good results. Is he going to positively impact and improve the school ranking or at least maintain it, only time will tell. -

I suppose those students whose strengths aren’t in Arts but applied for Arts stream in NYJC, probably didn’t even meet the COP (for Science) or at the borderline (need ballot).

For the P to close the loophole, it is only the right thing to do. Especially so when all other JCs are very strict about such internal transfers.
For parents who have no confidence in NYJC Arts, then by all means seek to transfer to other JCs deemed stronger in Arts stream.
The P is new! Give him a chance lah! -
It appears that, because of the loophole, the past cohorts of NYJC had a higher proportion of science stream students compared to other JCs that played by the rules. Assuming it is true that it is generally harder to do well in Arts than in Science subjects, I wonder what NYJC’s past impressive mean and median RP would actually be if it had a normalized cohort?
I applaud the principal for following MOE policy. -

Not sure what were NYJC past performance.

But in general, those JCs with stricter subj combination selection in Sci and Arts have usually performed better than those with more flexibility. Students who are genuinely more able in each stream will enter through own merits in Sci or Arts. Hence better results esp in Arts. Eg. In VJC, maths is the contrasting subj in Arts stream. All other subjs are pure arts. There is no option to choose H2 or H1 Sci. Hence Sci subjects in A level will retain their high standard.
If we view it this way, by right, restricting arts students from taking sci subjects will improve the school A level performance. I believe P new implementation in general is to improve sch std, not to pose restrictions on students.
It is harder to score better in Sci than Arts.
Hence, NYJC has been providing more flexibility for students while likely to compromise overall performance. This is my personal view only. But despite that, it is said that their A level results have been impressive too. If this is true, the saying of happy students produce happy outcome, really worked. -

Arts subjects like H2 (History, Geography, Literature ) ...
I suppose those students whose strengths aren’t in Arts but applied for Arts stream in NYJC, probably didn’t even meet the COP (for Science) or at the borderline (need ballot).

are harder to score.
Why ?
because
they are very subjective, to the Cambridge examiners' A-level marking scheme, in contrast or
compared to
the hard core Sciences like H2 (Physics / Chem / Bio).
Especially in H2 Literature Shakespeare stuff : very subjective, to marking by individual Cambridge examiners' marking.
Nanyang Junior College, all along, has been very strong in teaching Sciences, especially in her H2 (Chemistry + Mathematics). Many NYJC graduates excel in these two A-level subjects.
I know NYJC has a very good English Literature HOD. But the rest of the humanities lecturers, not sure. Perhaps the Seniors or former past graduates in Arts stream (NYJC), may elaborate (describe) more.
Having said that, I still feel that the new Principal who just came on board this year, should let this last batch of 2024 Arts stream JC (1) students pick whatever subject combination this year, for the very last time. Because the announcement made, is just too sudden ! Many Arts stream students are taken aback, too shocked, no time to react. The Principal ought to have announced this publicly, during the Open house day on 13 January 2024, of this intention to remove & seal up the loop hole, once and for all. Then, every JAE student is made aware of this new changes coming into implantation, start with effect from this year, if this piece of news have been publicly announced on the very day of Open house day, itself.
Otherwise,
u will see some of these Arts stream students now trapped, scrambling out desperately to seek Transfer elsewhere, to some other JCs. Because they actually want to study Science stream, and not Arts stream. And u can't blame such students, because this loop hole has been in existence, in the past for so many years. Even if want to implement changes, not say cannot. Of course can, but u need time for people (public) to accept, to sink in.
Yes, this new Principal is brave, is bold. He dare to stand up, to make right something, that was not right in the past. Because It takes a lot of moral courage for someone to go against the tide, instead of continue to flow with the natural flow of situation. For this, we salute you (Principal), Mr Pang :salute: He will be remembered in the history of Nanyang Junior College, for setting things right, correct.
All I am saying is ...
please also have mercy on this last batch of Arts stream students trapped inside, because they really have no time to react, from yesterday's announcement made. Some of them are crying in tears. If want, can, implement from next year's batch of new 2025 JC (1) students.
Why ?
Because do have empathy, for some Arts students trapped inside.
Imagine.
There may be some Affliated students, say from the affliated (Chung Cheng Yishun branch or Main branch). They may have come from the Triple Science classes, inside 2023 Sec 4 batch. Science stream, Is their strength. However, some of them may not have taken HCL (O-level). Their original Raw score could have been ... 10 points.
At 10 points,
minus away 2 points for Cca plus minus another 2 more points for affliation to Nanyang C, end up with nett 6. But the Cut off point for Science stream (NYJC) is nett 5.
But this affliated pupil ( student ) from CCHM or CCH (Yishun) still desire, very much want to pursue JC Science stream, either in B / P CME.
So, what to do ?
Enter via Arts stream at nett 6, first. And after gotten into affliated NYJC, then choose Science stream (B / P CME). After all, this has been allowed, for so many past years already.
Now, where can this affliated CCHM / CCHY pupil go to ?
If suppose this affliated pupil never take up O-level (Higher Chinese), if he were to seek Transfer to some other JC, at 10 points Raw, he can only maximum discount 2 points for his (her) Cca. That is, his nett is only ... 10 - 2 = 8 (nett)
At nett 8,
where can he seek Transfer to, now ? To which Junior College, that permit nett 8 for Science stream, although the Appeal window for Transfer out is still applicable, until early next week by a certain designated Cut off time ?
At nett 8, Science stream (Eunoia / Victoria / National) JCs Cut off point are out of bound. That's why I said, this new Principal who just came on board into NYJC, please show empathy & mercy, for this final last batch of greatly impacted (affected) Arts stream students. Yes, please demo mercy to them ! If want to implement, by all means, you can start implementing from next year's batch (2025) onwards. Because by then, nobody can say anything, cannot say that they are ignorant of this intentional changes taking place. Because by next year, every applicant into Arts stream (NYJC) jolly well know that ... no more loop hole exists. Just one more year delay only, in implementation.
Just like the former two ex Principals Mr Kwek and the other P who have continued with Mr Kwek's legacy, to this new Principal (Mr Pang), we applaud you, for your boldness and moral courage to stand up and make right, what was not right before. Your name will go down in history, in NYJC. However, please spare a thought, for this last batch of Arts stream students who are crying and trapped inside this dilemma now. We strongly appeal to you. To implement this change, one year later. Thank you very much, for your kind consideration, Mr Pang C H. -
Actually I am thinking if NYJC has performed so well over the past years due to the flexibility of the subjects combination, shouldn’t MOE be reviewing and implementing the same across all JCs? Regardless of Science or Arts, there is only 1 COP and after getting into their choice JC, students then decide which subjects combination to take. As I understand, many OP students prefer NYJC because of its status of a pure OP JC. #1 selling point. This is why they choose Arts and hoping to do Science. Now they have no choice but try to appeal out because NYJC is not strong in Arts. Unless the child really do not mind taking content heavy Arts subjects, it is not worth the risk IMO.

I am not sure if this P is brave and bold because it could be an instruction from MOE to close the loop hole.

Yes, I agree with you that Arts subjects (Lit, Hist, Geo) are harder to score than Sc subjects because Arts subjects are subjective to markers. Likewise for GP.
As a matter of principle, the loophole shouldn’t have existed in the first place. By giving advance notice during open house or tell the prospective students that closing the loop hole will only start from next year, it is actually legitimizing it.
Those who are strong in Science but cannot meet the Science stream COP, and yet chose to purposely apply for the Arts stream with the intention to do an internal transfer to Science stream subsequently, they are unfair to those who sincerely wants to do Arts in NYJC. They deprive/displace another group of arts students a place in NYJC Arts.
