Restricting subject selection to the stream one entered in is not about reducing flexibility but preserving a merit-based allocation in the JAE. Students that were balloted out of Science should not lose out to a student with a higher net score, higher gross score, or lower citizenship ranking because the latter entered via Arts but then switched to Science. It is also unfair to a student that wanted to study Arts in School XYZ, but too many of the spaces were taken up by \"Shadow\" Science students.
Actually I am thinking if NYJC has performed so well over the past years due to the flexibility of the subjects combination, shouldn’t MOE be reviewing and implementing the same across all JCs? Regardless of Science or Arts, there is only 1 COP and after getting into their choice JC, students then decide which subjects combination to take. As I understand, many OP students prefer NYJC because of its status of a pure OP JC. #1 selling point. This is why they choose Arts and hoping to do Science. Now they have no choice but try to appeal out because NYJC is not strong in Arts. Unless the child really do not mind taking content heavy Arts subjects, it is not worth the risk IMO.
Having one COP and then students selecting whatever subjects they want is likely to reduce the number of Arts students in some JCs. Nationally, the Arts / Science split is about 1:5. If there was only one COP, in many schools it would mean more Science kids getting in. At some point, there may not even be enough Arts kids to have full Arts classes / Humanities Programmes.
Lastly, Arts = at least two Arts and Science = at least two Science is already more flexible than some (many?) other schools. Often, the Hybrid combination is classified as Science stream. In the case where two and two are allowed in both stream, it could be possible that the same subject combination has two different COPs. That doesn't seem to make a lot of sense for the same reasons listed above, but I guess if everyone knows that's the case upfront, then maybe it is OK (I'm not sure about this one).
I applaud NYJC for creating an environment that the students like and performing well over the years (JAE COP and A Level Results). Still, I would say that the correct decision has been made; students should be required to take classes in the stream they entered. -

After I read the above post, IMHO, these students really deserve no pity. Full of self-entitlement and they are well aware that they are exploiting the loophole.
Extracted from Reddit:
” A principal who truly cares about students would have realized the harm to the 6-pointers Arts students if this flexible subjects combination feature is suddenly U-turned without advance notice. “
“Many folks on Reddit have said it is wrong of students to take advantage of the loophole. They deserve no pity. Well, these students managed to get 6 points and it is natural to take advantage of every possible offer available from schools as a 6-pointer. Would you do the same thing if you managed to score 6 points in your O'levels?” -
I rather feel sorry for the affected students though P shld not be blamed for the mess entirely.
My understanding is there are 5 nett pointers who put NYJC Sci 1st choice and NYJC Arts 2nd choice, in case they got balloted out.
A nett 5, 6 who took 2 or even 3 pure sciences are capable enough to do well in any stream, prefer science for their choice courses in uni. Taking arts now would limit their choices in uni. For these kids, taking Econs, Maths, Geo and P/B/C, they would be able to do well too.
I dont think Geo is harder to score than Chem/Bio/Phy, for a 5/6 pointer. But for an Arts students, even a 5 pointer, it would be harder to score in H2 Sci than Geo. Hence specifically for these students in case of NYJC, anyone would make good use of the situation to their advantage and there is nothing wrong. A 6 pointer has more merit than many but unfortunately, left with not many choices without balloting esp this year; Among the top few, only left with VJC, EJC, SJI.
These students chose a no brand pure JAE JC, would have free up places or balloting chance to those top branded JCs too, so benefiting other students as well.
Hope these affected students eventually settle down and make the best of their situation,
When life gives you lemons, make nice cooling lemonade. -
Do all other JCs allow Arts students to take BCME/PCME? Does it not sound weird?
Honestly, the previous two Principals are also at fault because they closed one eye to allow things to turn out this way.
I can sympathize with the affected students, but they jolly know well they were exploiting a loophole in the first place.
There are people who exploit loopholes, fair enough. But just be prepared for the consequences. There was this 99-1 loophole in property transaction to evade ABSD. But not everyone dared to exploit this loophole because they know there are consequences if caught.
Maybe one way to resolve this is, if there is indeed a staff who mis-represented the whole internal transfer matter, this staff should tender his resignation. The affected Arts students in NYJC would still have to go ahead to do arts or be transferred out to other JCs -
Hmm…… NYJC could be an unplanned for, decade long experimentation….

This year, after all the 2024 JC (1) NYJC Arts students with nett 6 (l1r5) who desire very much
B / P CME Science combination
have transferred out successfully to some other JCs like
(Eunoia JC, Victoria JC, National JC, Temasek JC, Dunman High, River Valley High, Anderson-Serangoon JC, St Andrew JC, Anglo-Chinese JC, Tampines-Meridian JC, etc) to pursue Science stream, in whichever JC that still has vacancies available left for Transfer, there won't be many Arts students remaining left, inside this batch (born 2007), after the Transfer out exodus.
So, wef next year 2025 JC (1) intake (for students born in 2008) will then show (indicate) the real, genuine batch and number of NYJC Arts students, taking Arts. -
I totally agree with the last statement that this is depriving genuine students who want to go NYJC and meet the COP with 6 nett. My daughter is one of such who met the Arts COP and genuinely wants to do Arts in NYJC, but got rejected during the ballot, I guess.
Now scrambling to appeal to get back into NYJC, and hopefully, she can get in with students posted to NYJC wanting to post out now due to this loophole being closed up.lee_yl\" post_id=\"2128446\" time=\"1706938177\" user_id=\"17023:
I am not sure if this P is brave and bold because it could be an instruction from MOE to close the loop hole.
Yes, I agree with you that Arts subjects (Lit, Hist, Geo) are harder to score than Sc subjects because Arts subjects are subjective to markers. Likewise for GP.
As a matter of principle, the loophole shouldn’t have existed in the first place. By giving advance notice during open house or tell the prospective students that closing the loop hole will only start from next year, it is actually legitimizing it.
Those who are strong in Science but cannot meet the Science stream COP, and yet chose to purposely apply for the Arts stream with the intention to do an internal transfer to Science stream subsequently, they are unfair to those who sincerely wants to do Arts in NYJC. They deprive/displace another group of arts students a place in NYJC Arts. -
There will be students who got balloted into VJC sci, EJC sci, SJI, RI arts, HCI arts,… thanks to the students putting NYJC arts as 1st or 2nd choice instead of these top IP JCs but no parents will come in to forum to thank them.

Since the loophole has only been patched this year, that means this year

2024 A-level batch (ie. pupils born in the year 2006)
will still have a lot of JC (2) Science stream students inside,
including
those Arts-stream-converted-to-do Science stream subjects, like
B / P CMX.
where
X = H2 or H1 Humanities
(Literature / Geography / History / Economics) -

...
It is highly possibly that
MOE post this ex (former) Hwa Chong Principal to come in wef 2024, to close up this Arts loop hole.
Why ?
So as to coincide with
this year 2024 new implementation of new changes made (introduced),
from 90 RP to 70 RP A-level marking scheme.
RP : Rank points, admission to universities
