I totally agree with the last statement that this is depriving genuine students who want to go NYJC and meet the COP with 6 nett. My daughter is one of such who met the Arts COP and genuinely wants to do Arts in NYJC, but got rejected during the ballot, I guess.

Now scrambling to appeal to get back into NYJC, and hopefully, she can get in with students posted to NYJC wanting to post out now due to this loophole being closed up.

I am not sure if this P is brave and bold because it could be an instruction from MOE to close the loop hole.

Yes, I agree with you that Arts subjects (Lit, Hist, Geo) are harder to score than Sc subjects because Arts subjects are subjective to markers. Likewise for GP.

As a matter of principle, the loophole shouldn’t have existed in the first place. By giving advance notice during open house or tell the prospective students that closing the loop hole will only start from next year, it is actually legitimizing it.

Those who are strong in Science but cannot meet the Science stream COP, and yet chose to purposely apply for the Arts stream with the intention to do an internal transfer to Science stream subsequently, they are unfair to those who sincerely wants to do Arts in NYJC. They deprive/displace another group of arts students a place in NYJC Arts.

There will be students who got balloted into VJC sci, EJC sci, SJI, RI arts, HCI arts,… thanks to the students putting NYJC arts as 1st or 2nd choice instead of these top IP JCs but no parents will come in to forum to thank them.

Since the loophole has only been patched this year, that means this year

2024 A-level batch (ie. pupils born in the year 2006)

will still have a lot of JC (2) Science stream students inside,
          including

those Arts-stream-converted-to-do Science stream subjects, like

          B / P CMX.

          where

          X = H2 or H1 Humanities
          (Literature / Geography / History / Economics)

            you are right, lee_yl

            It is highly possibly that
MOE post this ex (former) Hwa Chong Principal to come in wef 2024, to close up this Arts loop hole.

            Why ?

            So as to coincide with
this year 2024 new implementation of new changes made (introduced),

from 90 RP to 70 RP A-level marking scheme.

RP : Rank points, admission to universities

Do you think since NYJC previously allowed Arts stream students to take PCME/BCME, perhaps that’s why NYJC dared not show their overall A-level results all these years because it is sooooo skewed towards Sc and might look weird for their arts subjects?

For the most recent intake last year (2023), for the entire batch of JC (1) intake inside Nanyang JC located nearby Lorong Chuan mrt station, which is close to 700 all JAE JC (1) students intake (co-ed) -

out of 700 students, around close to 600 students are taking ... Chemistry. But, not sure how many amongst these 600, are taking H2 or H1 Chemistry.

As you know, if you are an Arts stream student, often, you will need to take a Maths subject, inside your Arts subject combination. Why ?

                  Because

Maths Is often an important compulsory pre-requiste requirement subject, for entry into many University courses.

Who then inside NYJC, will take Chemistry (at A-level) ?

                  1)

obviously, subject Chemistry is compulsory, if u are from Science stream. You have the option to choose another second Science subject : either Physics or Bio.

                  2)

If u are an Arts stream student, Yes, probably, there are some Arts stream students inside taking \"hybrid\" subject combination, also taking Chemistry. One highly valued upon selling, marketing point of NYJC by these excited JAE students coming in is that : NYJC offer very flexible subject combination. Thats what the JAE students like. According to your passion, u can pick your own subject. So, \"hybrid\" is allowed. \"Hybrid\" means that students can take a

Total of (2 Arts + one Maths + one Science) subjects. Total : 4 subjects

                  For Science stream :-

The strength or anchor point of NYJC, lies in her team of teaching staff, particularly for Maths & Chemistry. The teachers inside here are good & they are very dedicated to teach their students well. The students here, are also very hardworking & diligent. With a magic combination formulae of having both good Teachers + \" very keen, eager eyed\" bright students to learn (study) : every year, many NYJC students excel in these 2 subjects -

                  whether

you hail from the Science stream or you hail from the Arts stream (hybrid combination), taking Maths & Chem.

                  So, lee_yl,
if u ask me whether skewed towards Science or not, Sorry, I can't answer you this question,

                  because

inside Arts stream, there are also students taking a \"hybrid\" of Maths + Chem, with another two Arts subjects.

For those typical normal, usual Arts stream students, that is, non-hybrid, then, they will be taking

(one Maths + 3 Arts) subjects combination.

                  ========================

                  As to whether,
are the Science stream NYJC teachers teaching H2 (Physics / Bio ) good or not ? I am not sure.

                  Perhaps, depend on luck.
Depend on who is that particular teacher that has been assigned to teach you (student), inside your Civics Tutorial group. They call it the CT group. Within one PCME subject combination itself, already got many different CT group(s) formed.

                  Because
if some Teacher cannot explain A-level Physics / Bio concepts clearly across to students & end up, students don't get what the Teacher is trying to say in class / talking about, then, a bit ... difficult.

To be a good Teacher inside a (any) Junior College, to the students, it doesn't matter whether the Teacher possess(es) an Honors degree or a Masters or a PHD degree, in Physics or Bio. To them (the students), what matters most is :-

can they understand what you (the lecturer) is teaching, inside the Auditorium or via the pre-recorded lecture(s) ?
                  Especially,
when A-level H2 Physics is such an abstract subject. And A-level Physics is a lot, so much tougher (much more difficult) than O-level Pure Physics.

                    1)

one example of an Arts stream "hybrid" subject combination is

                    H2 (Maths + Chemistry + Economics + Literature).

Over here in NYJC, the English Literature HOD is very good.
                    If you have sat for
                    either

                    Elective Literature or
Pure Literature at O-level, and you are good at Lit, can consider taking up H2 Literature.

                    ===========================

                    A-level
Physics is often more popular than Bio. Because

taking Physics open up more (greater) options / opportunities later on, to choose your courses or faculty of study when u go to university later on. And subsequently, lead to more career options, to choose from.

There are also many girls, who like Physics & are good (strong) in Physics.

                    2) PCME

Inside PCME subject combination, in each CT (Civics Tutorial) group, there are definitely more boys present, than girls.

                    3) BCME

                    The other way round, instead.

Inside BCME subject combination, inside each CT group, there are usually more girls present, than boys. In a CT (BCME) group of say, around 25 students, usually … boys very few, in single digit.

                      For girls from

                      Tanjong Katong Girls Secondary school

who had sat for your Economics (O-level, subject exam code 2286) last year 2023 and are now in NYJC JC (1) batch, you have an advantage over rest of the other JAE students, who did not take this paper.

The advantage comes in the form of … having already grasped a good, clear foundation of Economics during your past 2 years in Sec 3 & 4. So, for Trimester 1 (2024), it will be kind of … going through the motion of a rapid revision in breeze, for you.

For the rest who are totally new to Econs, only newly introduced to this subject this Term 1, don’t worry. Soon, you will be going up the learning curve, fast.

some of you (Arts stream) 2024 JC (1) students,

                        with nett 6 (L1R5),

have appealed to Eunoia Junior College for Science stream, whose COP (EJC Science) is also nett 6, over the past one very busy week, but failed to get in.

However, in the end, fortunately, some other JCs have accepted and taken you in, for Science stream. So, your Appeal is now successful & you have transferred out of Nanyang JC, successfully. At least, you have gotten what u want. That is, to study Science stream, in a JC.

All the very best, to you.
                        Remember.
It doesn’t matter, where you go. Because
you are still a bright shining star wherever you go, as long as you put in effort to work hard. Next year (August 2025 onwards), whether you hail from

                        EJC / NYJC / VJC / TJC / NJC / ASRJC / SAJC / RI / HCI, etc.

everybody will be taking the same, identical A-level National exam papers. The best, is yet to be. So, all the very best to you, as you made your way, prepare to exit out of NYJC.
