This is my usual preference for vacations in places where I'm a bit more familiar. Will probably do this for future trips to Japan. I guess we're behind the learning curve as most people seem to have already visited Japan, often more than once!
Or ABB, for free and easy trip. Whole apartment to yourself. can chose location near train station to reducing walking. Get to experience living like local. Modern setting , ryokan setting, many choices. Comes with washing machine for you do own laundry. This way can reduce amount of clothing to bring , reduce luggage size. But minus the convenience of having someone to turn to for assistance like in hotel. My experience in Japan their
Apartments usually have a good blend of traditional
Japanese setting and high tech setups, all within an apartment. I felt safe too during the entire ABB stay in 3 different jap cities -

My only complain on Jap apartments is the staircases inside are steep . I couldn’t go up and down comfortably without holding onto the hand rail -
On your preference for small town
and history sites seeing, Japan’s Wakayama prefecture came to mind , which I almost went many years back, seem to fit the bill. I read it has many small, rich in history onsen inns scattered around that region cater for tourist. It is also famous for some ancient Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Routes, a world heritage site. Tourists can choose to trek the routes , 1 ,3 , 5 days routes, to visit the many ancient shrines, or take local bus to hop around the shrines instead. Wakayama prefecture is south of Osaka airport. Can consider it to be part of your future free and easy tour, together with Osaka and kyoto. There are many YouTube videos on it. -

My family usually book those near stations & with lift landing. Those that are off-track like the onsen we did at Kinosaki-onsen, we hv the owners or staff carrying all our luggage up. We enjoyed one of the best Japanese cuisine with Michelin grade. We had wagyu beef supplied till our waistline burst!
Some owners are so frdly & amiable giving us recommendations & directions, no diff fr hotel or better with local trails.
We did ano which was run like a bz travel inn but all amenities, including 24-hour coffee tea corner near reception.
Just hv to google & find yr preferred accommodation whether u prefer near train or tourist spots, or food. -

Hmm… I think those with owners around and serve food, are more like in the inns categories. Those are must try too. But not cheap. Go by pax. Around hotel price. Those ABB I stayed in, 2 of them I didn’t get to see the owners at all. We received door access pins via email.

Noted for the future! The tour we plan to book is in the nature of a quick intro and recce. We lived overseas for so many years that most of our travel time and budget was spent in those countries and heading back to Singapore, though we did bring the kids to US, Europe, and a few other places. Japan just didn't make it on our list till now. My husband's idea is that we should get to know Japan as it probably has things we like with minimal jet lag! Next time will definitely be F&E.

It's actually not strictly true that I haven't been to Japan - I was sent on an official trip to visit a few organisations in the early 90s for about 3 days, but as I was alone and didn't have much spare time, I didn't bother to sightsee. And in those days, Japan was super-expensive. -

Yes it’s more convenient for you to travel to Japan now it’s closer and ease of planning for F&E trip with all the online self booking sites. ABB, hotels and inns stay, easier to search and book now.

I can relate to your complaint. I stayed in Japanese apartments twice, and the stairs were so narrow and steep. Maybe it’s to save space or something. But I still enjoyed my stay in Japan.

Yes, narrow and steep. Maybe it’s just us foreigners not use to it….
I can relate to your complaint. I stayed in Japanese apartments twice, and the stairs were so narrow and steep. Maybe it’s to save space or something. But I still enjoyed my stay in Japan.

Haven't been to Japan so haven't seen any in person. But this looks like quite a lot of staircases in the UK!
