      Backpacker slmkhoo :xedfingers:

My only complain on Jap apartments is the staircases inside are steep . I couldn’t go up and down comfortably without holding onto the hand rail
I can relate to your complaint. I stayed in Japanese apartments twice, and the stairs were so narrow and steep. Maybe it’s to save space or something. But I still enjoyed my stay in Japan.

Yes, narrow and steep. Maybe it’s just us foreigners not use to it….

Haven't been to Japan so haven't seen any in person. But this looks like quite a lot of staircases in the UK!

And dark too, in older days. I remember when I was very young my grandmum brought me along to look for an old friend of hers in Chinatown shop that has staircases that looked like that. Spooky for a small boy like me. But 人去楼空. Expected.

But I felt Jap staircase in the house are steeper than any of those in spore old shop houses. I felt the risers height are higher than those in spore’ shop houses. Narrowness maybe same.

i think if one goes with tourgrp no worries.
stay in hotels no issues, i had not encounter such narrow stair case for all my bookings
with hotel or maybe newer apartments. But i heard my mum mentioned her stay in a taiwan minsu no lifts as well. The old folks need to carry tthe luggages up 😞

When i first travel to Paris, i had to lug my belongings “3 floors” up but it turned out to be 6 floors due to the bldg structure btwn 2 bldgs! Since then, I’ve been very careful to ensure my bookings indicate lift landing & I msg them again to confirm before pymt, if required .

I've not been to UK but those stairwell steps looks like fire exit stairs that I commonly see in US buildings 🙂

I would only really be concerned if I were travelling with the elderly with mobility issues, or very young children. My family doesn't fall into those categories! And we travel with small, light luggage.
