      Hi 陈老师,

请问一下,“看法” 类的材料作文,是不是一定要写一段建议?for example, after the child given the views on the topic (maybe two paragraph), does the child need to include at least one paragraph on建议 (3rd paragraph) before 总结?thanks!

        Hi Reenie,

Yes, for 看法/观点 type, after analysing the issue + sharing your personal thoughts, before wrapping up, the student can briefly share some suggestions (unlike for 现象/措施 type, where suggestions/solutions will the main focus).

Oh no, if the child did not write any suggestion, will the examiner 扣分?thank you 陈老师的指点!

I wouldn't term it as 扣分/mark deduction/penalization, but rather lesser chance of scoring higher grades.

The way I explain it to my students is:
            - relevant format/structure and/or basic content for Paper 1 and Oral will only secure you the minimal grade. the key to score better is about value adding (language expression, elaboration of pointers etc.)

            whereas

            - for Paper 2, it's a much straight forward case of being awarded marks based on right or wrong answers

Don't mention it. Here's a https://sandaochinese.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/2023-%E5%90%84%E6%A0%A1%E6%9D%90%E6%96%99%E4%BD%9C%E6%96%87%E9%A2%98%E7%9B%AE.pdf that were tested in schools last year. You can get your child to practice question analyzation and content plotting using them. 😉

                    Breaking news:

(Buried in the following article was this shocking point:

This means that students will have one written exam sitting for their mother tongue language (MTL) subject and will not be able to retake the exam, said Mr Chan during the debate on his ministry’s budget.

Currently, students are able to choose from two exam sittings for MTL, one during mid-year, usually in the first week of June holidays, and another during the O-level written exam period, usually in November.

“I understand that some may be concerned that they will have one less chance to improve their MTL grades,” said Mr Chan.)

Normally were there many students who would retake at year end?

I was told before (friends kids in o level) that they can’t retake the oral exam, so if the oral exam is not a distinction, their teachers told them not to bother retaking the written paper because the final grade is not likely to improve. Not sure how true irl.

And o level HMT students also take the MT exam only once. I think.

I dont have the stats. But presumably the ones who die die have to retake are those who didnt clear the min D7 but still aiming for JC. So what will happen to them going forward? Only one chance to meet the JC prerequisite? Desperate must pay for MT tuition?

There is also another issue here, which doesnt seem to have been considered. Now the year-end exams will have 1 more subject (MT) for the students to handle. Whereas previously they could spend first half prepping for MT and then 2nd half on the other subjects.
